Well conductor tests all completed this morning. just what i was expecting. think i could have done slightly better in them. was hoping to get update before i jet off to Egypt on Sunday, but no such luck i don't think. I was not very pleased to hear that if successful i would go into a talent pool firstly! was not told this at the interview. but i guess it would be worth the wait to be doing a job i have always wanted to do for years!

They usually let you know within a week.

As mentioned above, everyone gets put in the talent pool after passing, conductor courses are due to be run every two months for Manchester with the next one being on 2nd June.

A good conductor is worth their weight in gold to any TOC, especially Northern. Personally, I would have their pay on the same level as a driver. They are a much under-rated grade.

I don't think so - they don't do half as much work. A Driver is working non-stop during the trains journey from A to B while a Guard spends a lot of time sat in the back cab, sometimes having a laugh with other members of staff travelling pass in the cab while the driver is on his own working all the time.

Grinds my nuts when someone, well belittles or has a little dig on someone's role, call it what you want. Whatever industry your in, we are all a cog in the machine. Each any every one as important as each other. Regardless of pay scales.

I think you are incorrect there to be fair. Yes, it is a cog and one tooth is missing it will cause a cancellation however the training, the work and the role in general make a drivers role more demanding than a guards.

Just to put a different perspective on the point, but I think the higher pay is indicative of the responsibility solely on a driver. Conductors are no less valuable or less important, not by a long stretch, but at the end of the day, they are not solely in control of hundreds of tons of hurtling metal carrying many hundreds of people. It is a pretty huge responsibility that should not be taken lightly and if anyone is driving simply for the money, I would want them to remember exactly why they are being paid so handsomely.

I am not saying the train driver job doesn't come with a massive amount of responsibility, I'm just saying it could of been put a bit better than the above comment.

That said I suppose each person's entitled to their own opinions.

They are totally different roles Usually suited to different types of people. A Driver must be able to concentrate for long periods of time While a Guard has to problem solve a lot more than A Driver (unless in DOO land or a Major safety of the line/Mechanical incident) They are as valuable as each other and are just as critical as each other but in different ways. In real life Guards have respect for the "Microwaves" just as much as they have for the "Tail Lamps" We work as a team. and we certainly do not belittle each others role.

I have passed my conductor assessments and being told that they are reviewing the recruitment requirements and will be in touch within 2 weeks with an update. Does this mean I will get a start date?? Or ?? Thanks
