158 problem is platform clearances at number of locations, Llandovery being 1, I believe but don't quote me as being absolutely correct. The HOW has never been Alphaline.

I have never seen a silver 158 on the HOWL,but thought I saw a 158 stabled at Llandod during RWS week,years ago,this May have come from Salop

Interesting comment from Arriva on todays opening of Barmouth to Harlech
on BBC websites.


In my opinion any reduction is bund to increase passengers, a nice gesture.

Guest includes Mansel Williams Chair of Shrewsbury to Aber Line Lisison Commitee and member of Cambrian Rail Implementation Group. Msy get some insight on process of getting extra services and some detail not in public domain.

One overnights at Carmarthen and one at Cardiff Canton with a third S Wales diagram starting very early from Chester 0515 - you'll find the 3 will get everywhere on ATW Table 3 except Milford Haven.

Is a class 158 now the booked traction for daytime Fishguard boat train 7 days a week (and the evening Fishguard trial services on the 6 days they run)?

You'll look back to the choice and variety of 142/143/150/153/158/175 when the wires come to Swansea and west wales gets a homogeneous fleet of ex FGW 158's.

Went to the meeting yesterday,it was well attended in the Chester room at Shrewsbury station,I was an invited guest from the Shrewsbury/Chester line.

Interesting travel to Salop from Ruabon,saves congested Wrexham town roads in the late afternoon.caught the late running 1642 ex Ruabon,this train usually goes to Cardiff,but due to work in the Newport/Cardiff area,all Holyhead/Cardiffs stop/start at Shrewsbury due to pathing,a sensible move in my opinion ,as the Holyhead/Cardiff services attract far fewer passengers compared to the Manchester/South Wales runs.
The train was a two car 175,rough to say the least,taty carpets etc,on arrival at Shrewsbury this train became the 1730 to Manchester and left full and standing,I observed most passengers off the 175 on arrival at Shrewsbury ran for the Birmingham and Aberyswyth connections,another interesting spot was the conductor wore a badge,very formal Mrs L J.... conductor.
Ill leave the content of the meeting to Gareth.

Unfortunately Mansel Williams from the Line Liaison Committee and Rail Implementation group was not there, but we did glean that that there another tt that has been drawn up different to the one that Plaid Cymru were putting about (see previous posts) which does keep most 4 car trains and coast through running in addition to extra trains apparently. The Line Liaison Committee is having its first full meeting since the announcement of extra trains on Friday so some more stuff should filter its way out.

There should be an advert out for recruiting the new Cambrian Rail Officer in the next couple of months and by all accounts he/she should have some money in the pot to spend on advertising the enhanced service as the local authorities have been contributing to the pot but with non one in post for some time.

I have reported on the latest Pont Briwet rumours on that thread.

I have noted in the paper timetable one, This summers Sunday timetable shows trains departing Shrewsbury on the Cambrian line at 0845,the next being 1327,I was under the impression the 1126 would run,but the timetable says only from Sept 14th, pity I can not get a train into Salop from Wrexham to catch the 0845 for a Sunday day out,the 1327 is too late for me.

Class 158 (and 159 for that matter) are only permitted between CRV and Morlais Junction when running as a class 5.

Class 175 are prohibited from using the Down platform at Llandovery.

It would appear that this is a typo in the NRT - apologies for giving the impression that the 1126 would in fact run during the summer.

Cheers, no problem,I note ATW have not yet put up the web timetable one , colleague who is a director(NFP) at Gobowen booking office tells me they have had supplies of the paper pocket timetable one for a couple of weeks.
I may have stated elsewhere timetable one has changed,now it gives the Chester/Birmingham service at the front,Howl is now at the rear.
ATW have listened to us,we always considered timetable one was confusing to passengers using the line through Wrexham.
The timetable lists the Sunday 0845 as D runs to 7th Sept,the 1126 is G runs from 14th Sept.

158s can run attached to another permitted unit as long as it is locked out of passenger use. This was proved in 2007 when the Signalling work at Port Talbot overran by 4 days. It was the only was to get them in and out of West Wales.

Long suffering commuters will welcome the 0740 to Manchester and the 1650 to Chester & Nth Wales with extra carriages, I presume Welsh Gov will be paying for the hiring in of mark3s/DVT and class 67.

I notice that the 0950 and 1259 appear to be altered services (the 0950 running in place of a Llandudno train, the 1259 one from Bangor).

Do you know what other changes Arriva (and Virgin, if they've have a chance yet) plan to accommodate these?

The Down loop at Welshpool is now operational. Down Trains have been using it since Saturday. There is a 50 mph restriction on it to aid consolidation of the recently completed works.

There's a NR 97 and a short rake of Seacows running from Coleham down to Aberystwyth on driver training runs this week that have been using it. The dovey Junction loop has had use as well.

Refurbishment of Aberystwyth station has also started sign up saying toilets out of action till end of September and to go to Wetherspoons instead!
Still TSR on Talerddig bank between Bells Bridge and cutting by milepost 62.

Refurbishment of Aberystwyth station has also started sign up saying toilets out of action till end of September and to go to Wetherspoons instead!
Still TSR on Talerddig bank between Bells Bridge and cutting by milepost 62.

The driver training runs have been going to Tywyn. They went to Aberystwyth a week last Monday, and Tywyn on Wednesday and Thursday. It got terminated at Mach on Tuesday and Friday, running back to Coleham. It appears it ran to Aberystwyth Monday and Tuesday. Today, it was a tamper drag to Tywyn.

The Welshpool loop was handed back to Network Rail on Friday, 16th May, with 6Z97 using it that day to return from Mach to Coleham.
