My first guess would be it is one of the trains that stables at Dundee overnight. It wouldn't make sense for it to have come from Aberdeen.

Monday - Friday it splits from 1H25 0539 Dundee to Inverness.

On Saturdays 1H25 starts from Montose using a unit from Aberdeen so there is an empty stock working from Dundee, 5L09 0531 Dundee H.S. - Carnoustie.

The 0539 from Dundee to Inverness stops at Carnoustie for four minutes - I reckon they bring it up at the back of that service. I caught it last week, but to be honest I was too sleepy to notice if it was the same length at Inverness as it had been when we left Dundee.

Is it formed of a portion off 1H25? That's booked a four minute dwell at Carnoustie, which might suggest a unit being detached.

Too slow, twice!
