3x 170 Working on Greater Anglia

Any truth in a rumour going around that GA yesterday operated a train from Norwich to Liverpool Street consisting of 3x 170s all running together?

As a 9 car set, it would be very capable of moving a lot of people.

8-car on 11.00/13.30. 90005 developed a wiper fault that could not be rectified quickly. Plenty of spare stock due to engineering work on Wherry/Bittern lines.

It was extremely full on departing Manningtree at 11.53. Most London bound Norwich services from 08.00-12.00 are very busy with the 10.00 full & standing every week before Colchester.

I just happened to be at Ipswich when I saw this myself. Couldn't quite believe what I was seeing. I caught it later between Ipswich and Diss and was quite amused when the guard announced 'First class is available towards... throughout the train'.

Bet there where some very unhappy 1st class punters especially up road. Only around 22 rather than at least 96 seats & next to no freebies. Just a static trolley in one unit.

I remember taking a 170 a few times from Liverpool St to Norwich back when they still had their buffets and were new and didn't rattle like crazy. Was quite nice tbh.

Just one guard required. 170s cannot run in multiple DOO on GEML.

How does that work then? 170s don't have access through the train so someone could see what unit the guard is on and go in a different unit. E.G. if the guard was in 170271 the person could go in 170202 and get off at the next station if needed.

Revenue is not often not high up on the priority list. You always lose a few. Likewise only one trolley will be provided & on only one unit & that will only be static as they are deemed unsafe when passing through vestibules on AGA 170s.

Although this is personal opinion, I would certainly assume the latter!

Yeah, that's probably it. It has long been an issue that the current trolleys are not to be taken across 170 vestibules. Some staff have done to increase sales but officially not permitted.

I remember when Ipswich tunnel was closed being mighty annoyed I was in the wrong unit for the buffet! Even more annoying as the physical buffet was there at the time.
