Sorry if there is a thread on this before.

In June, (after 9.30am on a Thursday) will be going from Liverpool St to Stansted, returning the Sunday evening.

There are 4 of us, are there any reasonable splits? I'm not sure if all Stansted Express trains stop at Harlow Town or Bishops Stortford (which I presume are the logical stations to split at)?

I see on the stansted Express website this is available for £64 as an e/m ticket. Can this be beaten?

Also, I have some vouchers on redspottedhanky, I would rather use this website for that reason.

Thanks in advance all!

It's unlikely to be cheaper to "split", as you won't get period returns for shorter distance journeys, so you're looking at a string of singles. That's very unlikely to be cheaper.

The £64 appears to be equivalent to 4 x GroupSave discounted Off Peak Return (SVR) fares (see http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=1072&dest=SSD&rlc=GS4&tkt=SVR) which, in theory, should be available from stations.

There was a thread about it here; in particular note the advice regarding possible alternative destinations for your tickets.

An Off-peak Return London - Audley End is £24.60, or £49.20 for 4 using Groupsave. This is valid via Stansted Airport so can be used to stop short.

Thanks Yorkie, appreciate your help.

Is this valid on the stansted express?

Frustrating there are (cheaper) advance tickets for both Audley End and Elsenham but I know these would not be valid to stop/start short so a moot point really.

Yes the ticket greatkingrat has suggested is perfectly valid on-board Stansted Express.

Are you sure? I think there was a negative easement put in lately to disallow it.

G'day

Correct an easement is now in place to disallow travel on the West Anglia Mainline via Stansted Airport.

700455 Customers travelling from or via Broxbourne to London Liverpool Street and beyond, may not travel via Stansted Airport. This easement applies in both directions.

Cheers

So this is definitely not permitted? Despite NRE showing it is?

An absolute minefield I'm sure everyone will agree.

What about audley end though, surely that easement doesn't cover it?

Whenever I go to Stansted I always use the coach from Stratford, its not much slower & if booked in advance can be as cheap as a fiver. I also avoid a zone 1 fare getting there too. A few years back I also got the train to Bishop's Stortford & then the local bus to save money (not sure this still is viable)

I did look at the coach, cost as much and double the time. Cheers anyway.

I see previous threads have examples of people using the Audley End method. Has anyone had any recent experience of this?

If you buy the Audley end ticket from Tottenham Hale and board there, it avoids the easement.

There is no period return between Audley End and Tottenham Hale, only day returns.

Back to square one I guess.

There are much more expert ticket bods on here than me, who will soon put me right if I am missing something, but pretty sure that is fine. You can stop short at Stansted Airport. Think you can also start your journey at Tott Hale as well as Stratford, although best to buy ahead of time or start journey at Stratford if buying on day of travel as Tott Hale tic office may be difficult about selling those tics, even though they should be able to sell them.

That's fine. I will buy this on redspottedhanky.

With this being an off peak ticket, NRE suggests the first train I can get is 10am from Stratford. Would there be anything to stop me boarding from Tottenham Hale at 9.22/9.37?

Thanks in advance

The restriction on the outward leg from Stratford Monday to Friday is ' By any train scheduled to depart London Terminals at or after 0930, Stratford International or Stratford (London) at or after 0938.'

So first train is the 1000 Stratford to Tott Hale and you cannot get an earlier train than that from Tott Hale

Sorry for the late reply..

So, if the 9.22/9.37 are out of bounds. What is the earliest train I could get?

Would I have to wait for the 10.37 train (from Tott Hale) as this would be the first possible train I could get from leaving Stratford or could I get the 10.07 train or even 9.52?

Appreciate the comments all.

Just I see the conflicting times and obviously don't want to get myself and mates in trouble.

Can anyone else confirm the first train I could take from Tott Hale?

The 0952 from Tottenham Hale is the earliest you can get. There is no requirement to start your journey at Stratford.

Looking to do exactly the same journey with 4 of us in October (after 9.30am weekday, returning Sunday. Happy to go from either Tottenham Hale or Liverpool Street).

With groupsave changing, the Stratford to Audley End groupsave is £88 now.

Any other alternatives or just the £64 (e/m-ticket) option through the stansted express website?

The negative easement 700466 has been removed in the latest NRG (released 1st August) so you don't need to do the Stratford/Tottenham Hale trick any more, and can just buy from Liverpool St to Audley End
