Fares Advice: Hereford to Huddersfield

Hi,

Can anyone suggest the best value ticket(s) between Hereford and Huddersfield (and return)?

I am travelling from Hereford on 27th April (ideally arriving around 1600 or slightly later), and returning on 28th April some time after 1000. I have a YP railcard. As my timings are flexible, I don't want to use advances.

It seems the most convenient route is Hereford to Manchester Picadilly, and then Manchester to Huddersfield, although I am slightly open to diversions if it can be sensibly justified.

As an extra, can anyone give any info on the stock / route to Huddersfield? Are there any nice spots to break my journey and perhaps do any spotting for half an hour?

I'm not sure that anyone will be able to quote the "best" value, but trainsplit.com does find around £4 in savings by splitting. On that route there's a big saving for day returns, but not for period returns.

That's the route I always take. I ran it through the cheapest route finder at trainscanbecheaper.info and it can save £6 on the fare by routeing you via Lye (i.e. the Worcester to Snow Hill lines) then via Derby. I wouldn't bother.

Crewe's the obvious place if you're looking for stock. Or there's a nice buffet at Stalybridge. Had you been travelling on a Friday you could have incorporated the Denton flyer!

That's something that other forum members are best placed to answer, or possibly go and ask the question in Traction and Rolling Stock. I would imagine that you're probably better off getting to the East Coast Main Line if you can, though. York or Doncaster, for example. Someone will now tell me how wrong I am and how Manchester Picadilly is a hotbed of loco hauled action

Well, there's a fair amount of freight through P13/14 on weekdays, whereas most of the freight at Leeds uses the Whitehall Curve (though against that you've got Class 91's). Open Train Times or Realtimetrains will give an idea of what MIGHT run.

BTW Man-Hudd is 185s or 170s on TPE.
If units interest you, at Leeds you should see Northern's 333s, 321/9s and/or 322s, and probably 155s.
