Hi,

I am travelling from Manchester to Taunton via Newport on Monday departing Manchester Piccadilly at 0830 with an advance ticket.

The only reservation I have is on the Manchester to Newport train, so my question is can I travel on any connection to Taunton?

My itinerary when I booked the ticket stated the 1215 departure from Newport arriving at 1358, but it would be quicker to catch the 1144 First Great Western to Bristol Temple Meads and then the 1244 Cross Country to Taunton arriving at 1316.

Does anyone know if this is valid with this ticket?

The route on the ticket is AP FGW/ATW &CONN

You can use any reasonable non-reservable train for the part of the journey which is not reserved. A Cross Country service will be reservable.

Technically it isnt valid as the XC train from Bristol would be reserved but ask the XC TM before boarding the train, 99% will say its okay especially for such a short distance.

It should be fine; it does seem pretty unreasonable for someone to have to wait almost an hour at Newport when an earlier connection exists (especially at Newport of all places, too!)

The XC service could have had no remaining quota for Advance tickets.....

A quick search on NRES right now shows the XC connection as an Off-Peak ticket at £105.50 and the later FGW through train as an Advance ticket at £33.

You pay your money, you make your choice.....

More likely that XC is not an appropriate TOC for the "Connections" part of the ticket full stop. How the passengers would know that is anyone's guess.

Some might argue that falls foul of NRCoC Condition 10, particularly as there hasn't been a list of 'connecting train companies' since before "Simplification".

How do you define "valid"? (in particular, do you mean in the view of the Operator or one of us? and do you consider 'internal' railway documents to form part of the Contract?)

Are you prepared to fight XC, in court if necessary?
