Bolton used to have five but currently has 4. The station manager claims Network Rail has plans to re-add the 5th next year but there's a lot of scepticism around his claims as he hasn't shown any proof.

Originally, Halifax had 6 platforms.
You can see the remains of P.4 from the Eureka car-park, and P.5 & 6 [which used to serve the GN lines to Queensbury, Bradford & Keighley] have gone completely.

The old Slaithwaite station used to have 4 platforms, but the new one has only 2.
Further up the line, Marsden also used to have 4, but now has 3.

In its heyday, Rochdale used to have 4 through platforms and a couple of bays at the eastern and western ends.

Well originally it had 3, then 4, then 6, and now it has two.

In the future it's slated to go back to having 3!

If I recall, the Eureka building was the original main entrance, then some more platform lines were built so it was "marooned" on an island platform. These tracks have since been removed but the later bridge access is still used as the entrance to the station. Bangor (N Wales) also had its main building marooned in a similar way.

Eureka are going to be leaving that building so the platform on the current track edge can be bought back into use, as well as the bridge access.

I believe the plan is that the current road bridge/car park/taxi rank area will be demolished and replaced with a bus station.

I assume the old station building will be an integral part of the whole new interchange.

Nearby, Sowerby Bridge used to have 3 platforms (one for the now-defunct Ryburn Branch), as did Todmorden (with a bay platform for trains reversing onto Copy Pit IIRC - a procedure which could be repeated nowadays for the York-Blackpool DMUs, now the curve is in place, although I don't think the signalling has been done yet).

Pontypridd used to have 2 thru and 5 bay platforms. Until fairly recently this was down to an operating nightmare of one. Now has 2 thru'.

Birmingham Snow Hill had 8 platforms, 4 through and 4 bays. Now it's got 3 through platforms, though it will probably get it's 4th through platform back when the Metro extension is complete.

Yes that is still there, along with platform 7 (London end bay between the eastbound Central line and the down electric line) which I'm told was abandoned before it was commissioned back in the late 1940s. A better historian than me will know for certain.

Stratford is the reverse of this thread, with many new platforms being built in recent years.

Thanks. Yeah Stratford has been completely changed in the past few years don't think there's anything even left of the old station!

The original Snow Hill (or rather, the 1912 rebuild) did indeed have 8 platform faces, however the long through platforms were numbered 1/2, 5/6, 7/8 and 11/12. As well as the platform tracks, there were through lines between the islands with scissors crossings enabling trains independent access to each end of the platforms. This was not available on the outer faces which had only the single platform line. This vast station spent it's last few years housing a few peak hours only DMU's to Wolverhampton Low Level, surely the greatest over provision of station facilities in British railway history!

Stockton used to have a few north facing bays, judging by photo's I've seen, I'm not sure if it had any south facing bays. And I believe Middlesbrough had a through platform on the north side, as well as 1 or 2 bay platforms at each end of the station. Eaglescliffe had at least two island platforms, as opposed to the current one. Saltburn had more platforms that the current two.

On a similar note to above, didn't Sunderland once have two islands?

I'm sure someone posted on here once that it was one of the largest unstaffed stations in the world

A few I know of:
> Rock Ferry the Chester platform (formally an island platform)
> Bebington (had 4 platforms, I'm not sure when the other 2 went)
> Spital (had 4 platforms, 2 are still hidden in the undergrowth)
> Bromborough (Same case as Spital)
> Hooton had platforms on the former West Kirby line which is now the Wirral Way

Hooton actually had a 7th platform facing what is now the car park.

Ellesmere Port has a disused platform further down by the taxi office.

Also Birkenhead Park, West Kirby

Further up the line, Marsden also used to have 4, but now has 3.

Marsden had 4, then reduced to 2- then regained a 3rd (the reversible P3 on the 'village' side of the station) sometime in the late 1980s. Similarly, Mirfield was reduced to 2 during the 60s/70s and regained a third around the same time as Marsden. In both cases, P2 is now seldom used.

I can see where you're coming from, but it hasn't been. Trains only really use one platform because there's no need to use both with the current timetable. The other platform is still standing, the track is live etc. A train fault a few weeks ago saw both platforms in use, for the first time that I've seen in a long while.

The thumper went in there a couple of years ago on a round Kent railtour.

Thanks for the info on Halifax. Have you a link to any more detail, as Google only finds a Network Rail document from 2011 saying unspecified capacity enhancements may be needed.

Where was the bay at Todmorden? I can't see any room on either side on aerial photography, and the buildings look as if they would prevent anything longer than 2 cars even if the relevant platform was extended towards the viaduct. In any case I can't see the need for the Blackpool train to reverse here, as it would make an already fairly slow train take 10 or so minutes longer, with the only advantage being that passengers between Todmorden and beyond Blackburn would avoid a change of train somewhere in between.

Unfortunately, Maps has stopped.
Watford Junction is an interesting one. I know it used to have more than it does now - there's no platform 5, as is quite well known, but does anyone know how many it used to have and what they were for??
I know that today, it has 1-11, with no 5, as stated, but it looks like there was once a platform next to what is now the mainline tightly curved bay, 10.

The original station at Sowerby Bridge was on the site now occupied by Tesco, almost opposite what was the mpd.

Then, the "new" station at Sowerby Bridge, completed in 1876, had 5 platforms!

There was an eastern-facing bay in the Halifax/Brighouse platform, and this used to be used for connection services to Wakefield & Normanton, or Halifax and Bradford, from the main Calder Valley expresses.

Then there were the down and up main line platforms.

The up main line was an island platform, allowing slower trains from Normanton/Wakefield or Bradford to be overtaken by faster Calder Valley services. Trains terminating at Sowerby Bridge from Normanton or Bradford also arrived at this platform to connect with the express train using the up main platform, then reversed back past the signalbox and on to the main line, crossed-over and shunted into the eastern bay.

Then there was a single platform, some distance away, on the Ryburn Valley Branch line, making 5 in all, not 3.

Apologies- I have not been there for a while.
I knew the timetable operated using a single platform and thought a platform had been closed following this.

Todmorden had a loop round the back of the down, eastern-bound platform, but with no platform face itself. As I remember, this was used mainly for the stabling of coaching stock.

The bay was at the eastern end of the up Manchester platform, allowing access across the viaduct and on to the original curve towards Copy Pit. It was, as you surmise, only a short bay, admitting only a 2 car dmu or a short locomotive-hauled train, and was used mainly by connecting services to Rose Grove and Blackburn from the up Calder Valley expresses.

As far as I remember, none of the through services from the Calder Valley towards Copy Pit reversed at Todmorden. Instead they used the link from Hall Royd Junction, avoiding Todmorden, as indeed they still do.

I assume the old station building will be an integral part of the whole new interchange.

As I've said before on these forums, an integrated bus/rail exchange in Halifax was an opportunity missed when goods lines were removed and the station rationalised in the 1970s; and again, later, when the original bus station was moved from the Crossfield site to the existing "new" one off Winding Road.

I am very interested to read from your post that there are now actually plans for a bus station to be built by the removal of the bridge, taxi-rank and car-park area. Someone has been listening to me!!

However, as any such new interchange would be on the site of the present car-park for Eureka! [and as far as I know, although they may be giving-up their premises on platform 3, they are remaining in their present building on what used to be the goods yard].

So I'm afraid I'll reserve my full rejoicing until I see the actual plans! So, can you provide a source, please?

Reddish South & Denton both originally had 4 platforms (2 islands) until the mid 50s,the remains of which are still visible. Also Stockport used to have 5 bays, but now only one.

No apology needed :D
It is very rare to see something in the other platform, let alone both occupied at the same time!

Birkenhead to Chester used to be 4 tracks from near Birkenhead mpd to Ledsham Junction, just south of the closed Ledsham station. From memory all the (then-existing) intermediate stations except Port Sunlight & Hooton had 4 platforms. A new platform had to be built at Port Sunlight when the line was reduced from 4 to 2 tracks.

Darlington had two bay platforms for Bishop Auckland till the '80s. Access was before the main station.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

indeed Bishop Auckland used to have 4 platforms (3 for passgrs 1 parcels/freight) but now only one or two if you include Bishop West for the Weardale railway.

Just on the London, Tilbury and Southend, there were:

Southend East - 2 more on up-side loops, latterly used for parcels
Southend Central - 2 more terminating up-side bays, mainly for seaside excursions
Mainline platforms on what are now wholly LU stations at Hornchurch, Dagenham East, Becontree, East Ham, Upton Park, Plaistow, Bromley by Bow. East Ham also had an east-facing bay on its north side for what is now the GOBLIN service.
Plaistow had a west-facing bay on the south side for the shuttle to Bow NLL, which had to cross all 4 tracks. That didn't last long!
Nothing at all left of Burdett Road station. Some remnants at Shadwell and at Leman St.

On the Tilbury Loop the Tilbury Riverside platforms are gone but the building remains. Nothing left to see of Low Street or the halts or teminus on the Thames Haven branch.

I'm sure I've missed something . . . .
