I have just seen Network Rail's 950001 sat in the sidings at Banbury.

With the DMU shortage up north, why is NR using a 150 as a test train as opposed to something made from locos, or perhaps mark 1 DMUs?

There is a good reason for using this type of unit. It is an older type of unit and records on mostly secondary routes, where the type of traction is the norm. At network rail we have a large fleet of test trains and there are reasons why certain ones are used on certain routes. Obviously the non track recording trains can be hauled by most locos. With the above said when the unit has a problem or is unavailable a loco and the track recording coach will be used. All track will have a programme to be recorded at set frequencies depending on track category.

950001 was purpose built and has never carried a fare paying passenger..

As you say it is a specially built test train for rural branches in the production body of the last 150/1. The interior is completely different in layout, it just happens to be in a 150 bodyshell.

I did idly wonder whilst at Derby once (where 950001 was stabled) if, once 150s start to be withdrawn, Network Rail might consider buying some on the cheap and converting them for test train duties.

I'd take a Mk1 DMU or 31 and coaches over a 150 any day. NR can keep it!
