In 2021 it enables most cross country services on the NE-Reading axis to go over to electric, once Grand Jn to Derby is done.

I would do Lichfield to Derby first before Grand Jn to Derby.

Are there not issues with wiring between Doncaster and Sheffield - something to do with Conisborough Tunnel? I have heard it suggested that W10 and OLE installation may only both be possible by singling the track through the tunnel. Does anyone know anymore on the truth or otherwise about this?

Do we know if this solved the problem?

I believe EMT only have Penalty Fares between Sheffield and London, so it would be an excess fare.

Even if their TMs do announce that Penalty Fares apply on departure from Leeds!

Edit: Some time ago somebody in another thread said that there would be some wiring this year near Selby, and I see now that that comes from page 42 of this:

Thanks for posting this! I've spent ages trying to find it again!

I probably couldn't find it again - the organisation of the NR website is a nightmare!

Complete thinking aloud here re your thinking aloud, some very interesting thoughts you have

2, A new Doncaster-Chesterfield stopper ? Again that's not going to generate a great business case, even if extended to a Doncaster Airport Station or (Northern?)

Leeds to Doncaster EMU stopper extended all the way to Chesterfield via Sheffield calling all shacks and the continuation of the Leeds - Nottingham 'express' 158 orientated service?

3, MML extensions to Leeds/York via Doncaster (EMT) to boast the overcapacity XC services - I like this bit

Would this be some form going behind the back of EC and would they kick up a fuss if an all day hourly service ran Leeds to London StPan

Adding the extra bit between Moorthorpe and Swinton at the same time makes a little more sense, creating in addition to the above the following opportunities;
5, Opens up EMU options for stopper and semi-fast local services between Derby/Nottingham to Wakefield/Leeds (Northern)

Again i'd just continue the current 158 orientated service from Leeds as previously mentioned by to provide a Doncaster to Nottingham service i'd maybe introduce a Hull to Nottingham service with the same style of calling pattern to the current Leeds - Notts. Alternatively extend Scarborough to Sheffield services to Chesterfield. Both these leave little need for this section to be electrified unless XC would like to continue to skip Doncaster on the services that go via Leeds. Best case i think would be for both their hourly services to go York-Leeds-Wakef-Donc-Sheffield without exception.
Could perhaps go with 3 or 4 Leeds to Sheffield EMU services per hour calling all shacks, 2 via Donc, 1 or 2 via Moorthorpe. (Could be a huge pathing issue between Leeds and Donc with 2 EC, 2 XC, 1 potential EMT and 3 or 4 Northern stoppers each hour)

I feel that the case would be much stronger if the Hope Valley Line was also wired up at the same time as Sheffield-Doncaster and Swinton-Moorthorpe, giving the following in addition to the above
7, Liverpool-Manchester-Sheffield-Nottingham EMU (EMT)
8, Airport-Manchester-Sheffield-Doncaster-Airport EMU (TPE)
9, A quieter cross pennine electric freight route

Completely agree

But all this opens up questions about the future of TPE to Cleethorpes, are there enough EMU's to cascade in time and what services get new EMU's

Also, what comes after this package of overhead wiring ?

I'd put all I own on TPE getting a completely new fleet of 3 or 4-car EMUs and Northern getting a whole host of ex-London orientated EMUs nearing life's end that they'll sweat for ten years+
As far as wiring after that goes i'd do Leeds to Sheffield via Barnsley.

Manchester to Stalybridge is certainly being done first, but I thought it had been said that, so far as the rest of TP electrification is concerned, they would work west from York or Selby, so as to do the easy bits first and give more time to plan the more complex bits between Stalybridge and Leeds.

Edit: Some time ago somebody in another thread said that there would be some wiring this year near Selby, and I see now that that comes from page 42 of this:

Surely this would only be Hambleton junction towards Leeds so just to meet up with Neville Hill

Don't forget the Scunthorpe/Adwick-Donny-Sheffield stoppers continue to Retford and Lincoln, which would obviously be impossible if only Donny to Sheffield was electrified and served by EMUs. Is there some contractual obligation to serve Meadowhall from the SE Sheffield area?

EDIT: Well the Scunthorpe bit would not be possible anyway, just realised!

What the document says is
Plans to deliver small lengths of electrified route between Leeds and York/Selby by Autumn 2014 to give some added operational and performance flexibility to LNE are being developed.

That could mean either Hambleton to Neville Hill (which is about 15 double track miles, similar to NW electrification phase 1) or Colton to Neville Hill (which is more) or both (which is more still). So it doesn't really fit with "small lengths".

Very true, i dont really see what else gives operational flexibility though. Surely it would be flexibility for EC rather than Northern unless it was an extension from neville hill to say garforth and then northern operated through services from Airedale, Wharfedale or Doncaster through to Garforth or wherever the wires reached.

Interesting one and only time will tell.

Potentially the trains could show 'Luton airport parkway' on the Leeds destination screens to appease EC. No need at St Panc.

Remember EMT only rn to Leeds for stock positioning. It seems unlikely that their new stock will be based at Neville Hill, so why would they run to Leeds at all?!

That would extend the journey times of everyone using XC over this section! I think its fair to say XC have a long standing desire to run both services via Leeds, and for their journey times to be reduced rather than increased!

That's all even if the paths can be found! My feeling is that when the new EC franchise is awarded theres a good chance of an hourly York stopper, and for a Leeds service to go via Hambleton Junction - this would pave the way for XC to operate all their services via Leeds and not serve Doncaster at all.

Hmmm correct me if I am wrong but isn't ALL the EMT heavy/ Planned HST maintenance done at Neville Hill...??

It is indeed. But only through an accident of history. Why would a TOC ever plan to have its main depot for a fleet so far from where it operates them?

Hmm, how about they show Ashford International and are formed of 395s? ;)

even if it does get electrified, Sheffield to Adwick EMU'S are a good idea in principle, but given platforms are at a premium, and a lot of platform sharing goes on at Sheffield to accommodate the time table, where will a 4 car or 3 even, actually go?

Indeed, I'd have thought that'd end up with services running through, perhaps Chesterfield, or the Hope Valley or wherever.

At Althorpe any knitting wouldn't be able to go up primariliy because of the King George ??? bridge which is immediatley to the east of the railway station.

On another, but now closed forum, I mentioned that one of the tunnels on the MML would have to have the Severn Tunnel treatment, whereby a rail would have to be mounted to the tunnel ceiling as the tunnel wouldn't be able to be modified because of the risk of the land above the tunnel.

By the time this stretch is up for electrification i'd imagine there'd be a way. We've got around 10 to 20 years and thousands of miles to do before this will be done so by then we'll have all sorts of new techniques.

How do you know the bridge is difficult to electrify anyway? Do you know the headroom to the overhead girders?

I'm not familiar with the bridge but from Google Streetview it seems about the same over the road and railway so I suspect not a problem. Wikipedia says the bridge hasn't opened since the 1950s so that aspect can probably be ignored.

Why not attach an electrified bar to the bridge anyway.

The tunnel is now cleared for W12. The secondary lining of the tunnel was removed so the track could be lowered and the 6ft reduced too.

Has it also been cleared for OLE installation? I couldn't see anything in the article that suggested that it had.

Design work is in its early stages for OLE - I'm not an OLE man, but from the gauging works carried out, there is well over 5 metres between track level and the tunnel at the centreline of each track. Plenty of room for the 4.7m+ wire height and system height.

I'm not sure of the proposed method of fixing to the tunnel - perhaps a single invert T fixing for both tracks suspended from the soffit.

The problem is "where do you stop" - by wiring this route, you leave a short gap from Swinton to Moorthorpe that would be a huge improvement... there's three trains an hour that you could convert to EMU if you also did Meadowhall - Barnsley - Kirkgate - Leeds... there are a number of routes that you could tackle that would free up a decent number of 75mph DMUs.

Good question where do you stop? Personally I think keep going through to Gilberdyke (Gilberdyke- Hull is already being wired). Extra 46 miles of wire (23 each way) and you can run the Hull to Sheffield fast service saving 4 158s**, the Doncaster to Hull stopper saving 3 and the Doncaster to Sheffield stopper saving 2 so 9 altogether for 80 miles of string (just got to sort out Goole Swing Bridge) and also a useful diversionary route for Hull Trains once they get EMU post Selby electrification

** The Sheffield to Bridlington service would have to be split but Hull isnt the hardest station to change at.

The newest trains in the UK are those running from Manchester Airport to Manchester Picadilly, Wigan, Preston, Lancaster and stations to Glasgow/Edinburgh...

...but we keep seeing complaints about how hard done by "the north" is.

That's right. For journeys over 200 miles in a glorified suburban EMU with poor views out, too much space wasted on mid carriage doors and not the best ride. Why is something better justified for the poor dears travelling London-Bristol/Swansea, London-Norwich, Brighton, Bournemouth, Birmingham etc., all shorter journeys?

As a passenger on this line I cant say this would benefit me, but I can see it would be for the greater good.

My feeling is that the mitigation ought to be a direct service from Hull to Birmingham. Perhaps one of the Hull-Sheffield fast paths could be tagged onto a CrossCountry - this then gets to the question of whether XC can give up operating York-Doncaster, whether EC add another York stopper (probably after IEP) and whether paths could be found for another XC giving 2 via Leeds and the DON-HUL.
