Passengers are not interested in your excuses, nor impressed by your contempt for them.

They want the train operating company to do what is necessary to provide a quality service.

You behaving like Basil Fawlty in 'Waldorf Salad' is not the solution.

Seriously? So what is the solution then clever clogs? Just cancel trains because toilets have broken?

If toilets regularly block, either install better toilets. Or employ some plumbers. Or whatever else it takes to have working toilets.
(You're going to keep putting the fares up above inflation anyways, so I don't see how cost is relevant)

But that service isn't designed for end-to-end travel. If you're at Guildford there are much faster services to Clapham Junction and Waterloo - and they have loos on board too.

Not during peak rush hour is my point.

I was on a 159 once (stood near the toilets) when a bloke came running out of the saloon with his cupped hands (full of vomit leaking through his fingers) out in front of him, I did the decent thing and opened the door for him. Poor bloke was in a right state!

When I was a guard working the late night (455) trains I used to announce "if you are feeling unwell please use the bins provided by the doors and not the lap of the person sat beside you", manglement didnt like it but the trains were much cleaner after I started making the announcements than before so I think it did some good!

This guy wasn't going to be sick! he had the runs! (s***s). What would you guys do in his situation? When you gotta go you gotta go?

Which? That there are no fast trains during the peak? Or that the fast trains during the peak don't have a loo on board?

There aren't any fast services from Guildford to Clapham Junction in the peak hours as services on the fast lines are unable to stop at Clapham in the peaks for capacity reason.

Pile of newspapers in the end vestibule with the guard keeping an eye out so nobody sees and then throw the lot out the cab window.
Before you ask, yes I have actually done that for somebody on a 455 once (its easy as you can close the vestibule door so nobody can see in), it still sends a shiver down my spine thinking about it! :-?

I think that you are mistaking me for someone with any authority over the cost of your tickets. I just drive the trains. If you have complaints about fares you need to go through official channels such as your local MP.

I don't like you suggesting that I am responsible for the fares ("you're going to keep putting the fares up..."). That is uncalled for and I'm happy to have a conversation/debate on here but not communicate with people who are going to make suck silly accusations.

I guess its worse if it you are struck down with the runs, being the driver!

A few years ago a friend and I rolled out of Colne beer festival in good time for the last train back to Preston. My friend, knowing his limited bladder, had a pee before we left the festival (a few minutes walk from the station), one discretely near the station - the bushes survived - but found the loo on the 142 out of order. The guard did, out of frustration at my mate asking where he should pee, say that it was because of people like us that the loo was not in use, but we knew where he was coming from so took it with a pinch of salt. But asked if he could hold the train while people had a pee (we weren't the only ones who'd been at the beer festival) at a station- he was having none of it. By Accrington things were bad, the guard was getting understandably flustered. An empty bottle or two had been filled by some folk. My mate was desperate. I made a pact with my mate that I would obstruct the door of the train while he had a pee on the station. In the end, the guard agreed to hold the train while bladders were emptied.

There's all kinds of wrong and blame going on there. No toilets, peeing on railway/public property, intent to obstruct train doors and I'll wager the guard broke a rule or two too.

If I have the trotts that bad then I wont be going into work, they dont need me spreading that lot around the messroom (if its contagious).

Unless I'm misremembering that happened to London Midland a couple of years ago. Sickness going round.

I often wondered about this eventuality! How many of the mysterious handwaving "due to a fault on a train" announcements Southern give are due to incidents of this nature?

None of them...a train fault means a fault with the train. If the driver was taken I'll then it would be cancelled due to 'a member of train crew being unavailable'.

I have decided to start using the ignore list in my UCP as my last (intended) post would have put me on the naughty step again!

So congratulations to <the member>, I dont have to read any more of your trolling posts. Hooray.

Edit-

Infobeep you are correct about LM, it has happened to a few other depots as well but most manage to cover all the jobs on overtime and/ or using staff from other depots.

I've found some of your rants amusing, but wonder if I'm missing a joke here? Do you actually begrudge traincrews the right to have a dump?

Well some posters on this thread clearly begrudge passengers' right to have a dump...
Although when I posted making note of this, posts were deleted as having no relevence to the thread...

We dont begrudge anyone having one. What a lot of people are pointing out to you and others are the logisitcs of trying to empty/fix toilets with such short turn around times. And if its not possible we are asking would you prefer us to cancel the trains instead?

Mind, you probably would so you could be hilarious on twitter to Southern once again

I think you will find that the large majority of passengers would like the trains to run on time AND to have working toilets, and expect train operating companies to manage things so that both these things happen. They're both pretty basic and fundamental.
You can rant away if you wish that your customers are being unreasonable in wanting these things, but you won't change their minds. Again I can't really see what further advice to give except that you pay close attention to the Fawlty Towers episode 'Waldorf Salad'.

And we would love to provide such things but again how do YOU propose we do this at peak times with a 4 minute turnaround?

You come across as a no it all so please give us some answers and then please tell us how we can prevent passengers from breaking toilets with malice whilst on route?

Why blag a franchise with a bogus 4-minute turnaround timetable if it's not actually achieveable without passengers having to soil themselves?

If you're going to sell tickets for a timetable then you need to be able to deliver. If you can't, stop trying to con you customers.

I already suggested investing in better (less blockable) loos and/or more plumbers, but that was deleted as it was apparently off topic.

You clearly don't know what you are talking about looking at your posts and just want to come across as being funny. Keep it for twitter, not this forum which is a place for discussion, not ill informed rants.

Why blah a franchise with a 4min turnaround? What exactly do you mean by that? Are you seriously suggesting that in order to keep toilets working (despite most being locked due to vandalism rather than general use) Central London stations need expanding to give longer turnaround times? Widen approaches to fit in more tracks which will include buying and knocking down buildings and homes bordering with the tracks? Spend billions building more platforms, buying more carriages, employing more train crews etc to increase turnaround times? Just so the railway can have time to fix toilets which have been broken by passengers vandalising them.

But where do you have the extra plumbers (or equivalent)? If a toilet becomes blocked part way through the journey; do you delay the train whilst someone comes out to a small station in the middle of nowhere to fix it where there are no facilities to pump anything, or do you carry on to the terminus point of that journey and then delay the return working by heading off to the carriage sidings where the facilities to fix it are?

If you do these; then you might as well cancel it and inconvenience everybody so that the few who need to can go.

Improving the toilets is one thing; but all toilets have issues at times - there is one in our office block that seems to now be permanently blocked and has been for months if not years! If you've got any advice on that then I'm sure the on-site FM team would be delighted to hear from you :D
