Radio Caroline 50 years old.

It surprises some that the famous pirate radio station is still going, all be it legally now. Only broadcasting on the internet from studios in Kent, but they still have their boat the Ross Revenge in Tilbury Dock and broadcast from that from time to time, usually when they can get a RSL broadcast on medium wave for the local area.

Anyway Friday 28th March is officially 50 years from the start of their broadcast in 1964 but over the four days of Easter they are celebrating with their top 500 albums as voted by listeners. Starting with number 500 on the Friday morning going down to number one on the Monday.

It should make for some great listening.
They last did this in 2008 when the top three were......

2. The Beatles 'Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band'
3. Fleetwood Mac 'Rumours'

Radio Seagull returned to the airwaves in 2003, they now broadcast from Holland (although it is in English) on MW which can be heard on the English east coast, and they also broadcast via the internet. http://www.radioseagull.com/

Radio London or BigL as it was known relaunched around the same time in London on MW with Cliff Richards doing the opening ceremony, but the station has gradually declined and is now effectively only a internet only station.

Radio Essex is no more but there is BBC Radio Essex who remember their heritage and most years do a pirate month.

As far as I am aware Radio England no longer exists.

This is a tribute station broadcasting until 27th April as part of the Radio Caroline 50th celebrations.

They had a few technical difficulties but it is up and running now.

Absolutely....it was wonderful to listen to at the age of eleven under the blankets! I think I received my first transistor radio Christmas 1966, considering that the BBC only seemed to broadcast pop music on Pick of the Pops, 2-way family favourites and Junior Choice (was it called that in the '60's?), the pirate radio ststions were a godsend!
