What to do Workington/north Cumbria area

Hi all

I'm off up to Workington on Saturday 12th April. I'm travelling on advances from Chapel en le Frith to Penrith, arrive there 0930 ish and its a sport weekend, so will need to be in Workington by 1:30/2pm to check into my B&B, watching football and speedway that day.

Any ideas what I can do on route between Penrith and Carlisle? I'll also have about 3-4 hours to kill in Workington itself on the Sunday, given I'll checking out my B&B on the Sunday morning and Rugby isn't till 3pm, so don't really want to do anything over there.

Was thinking Carlisle Castle as one thing to do but that area isn't somewhere I know that well.

I can't help you with the area, but a day of trains, football and speedway sounds wonderful to me.

The only problem is I want the Comets to win, and as you are visiting I suspect you may be supporting the visiting team.

The X4 bus goes from Penrith to Workington via Keswick. Plenty to do in Keswick, even if you don't want to go to the pencil museum...

I'm actually going primarily for the Rugby League on the Sunday but have to stop over, as you cannot get to Workington from Derbyshire for a 3pm kick off on a Sunday due to scarcity of trains from Carlisle to Workington.

Football second, as I'm a football ground-hopper, Speedway was a late add on as I've never actually seen it before and just so happens, Workington are playing on the Saturday night. Better than a night in Workington's pubs

Just better to cobble 3 sports in one weekend, but as I said, a night's stay is a necessity given Sunday transport

I didn't know that existed and has helped me out a serious amount, means I can get from Workington to Penrith for my train south at 2038 without leaving the R.L at 1640 for the 1648 train and then finding 2 hours to kill in Carlisle Means I can get to Penrith and spent a bit of time in the Agricultural at Penrith on the way back

Any idea on fares at all? Will need to go from Worky to Penrith on a through journey at least.

Probably close to the cost of the 'Explorer' day ticket fare if not exactly the same. Penrith to Keswick is over £5 single, your trip is double the time. Things don't come cheap with Stagecoach in Cumbria.

Perhaps do the journey all the way by bus! You can certainly get as far as Bolton from Workington by Stagecoach service buses on the same Explorer ticket, not sure if there is a gap Bolton to Manchester. Then again, you won't get home in time for work on Monday (or perhaps even Tuesday).

Saturday - X4/X5 departs Penrith Rail Station at 1021, arrives Workington 1207. Every hour as far as Keswick then every half-hour Keswick to Workington. Stop off in Keswick and have the Hungarian Goulash in the Dog & Gun.

Sunday the last X5 bus from Workington is the 1725, arrives Penrith 1906 (as from 5 April 2014).

Service 300 runs from Workington to Carlisle. Departs Workington at 1835 on Sunday, arrives Carlisle 2000 - £5.60 single.

Workington are having a really bad time in the Skrill North this season and occupy the bottom (22nd) position. They are due to play Solihull Moors this weekend, who are in 8th position.

I remember Oldham Athletic playing them in the league, before they were voted out in 1977 and were replaced by Wimbledon. A point of interest...Bill Shankley managed them in 1954 and 1955.

On Sundays, the bus services do not give you enough time to visit Carlisle Castle and get back to Workington in time for a 3pm kick off.
