How could coach travel be better?

Inverness to Wick by direct train, over 4 hours.

Inverness to Wick by coach, changing at Dunbeath, about 3 hours.

Until the calls at Halbeath and Kinross were added, the M90 Edinburgh-Inverness service was faster than the train.

Glasgow-Fort William, 3h08 on the bus, 3h41 on the train.
Glasgow-Oban, 2h55 on the bus, 3h05 by train.

Falkirk Bus Station to Edinburgh terminus the middle of nowhere is 1 hr 25 to 1 hr 40 depending on time of the day which is far slower than the suburban stopping train from Grahamston to Edinburgh. The train only takes 35 minutes.

1 hour 40 on the same bus from Falkirk to Edinburgh is disgraceful. 1 hour 40 is the sort of time you would expect to get there changing at Linlithgow cross and waiting 20 to 25 minutes.

But there is no direct train to Inverness from Halbeath or Kinross so for them the direct coach is far quicker than going by train.
