SWT had two 158s and nine 170s. The 158s were leased from Angel whereas most other SWT stock is owned by Porterbrook. As the 185s were being delivered to TPE and 158s were released SWT got the opportunity to acquire nine 3-car 158s which became 159/1. They were also able to acquire eleven other 2-car 158s that were renumbered when they were refurbished and painted in SWT livery. The two 158s they had previously had went to Scotland and the 170s went to TPE.

It's one of those sensible TOC>Leasing company decisions which go on from time to time, FGW did the same with the ex TPE 158s replacing the majority of the ex Wessex/Central 158s (with their range of different engine options!) that came with the GW franchise, although obviously thanks to the assistance of the DfT didn't quite go their way.

The Ex SWT pair has now at least received ScotRail's new livery, even if it still surprisingly (or at least did when I was last up there last year) retains it's SWT interiors. I believe it was one of the 158s originally earmarked for moving to the Northern Rail franchise - who incidentally did paint it into their shade of Blue at Neville Hill, before the decision was made to keep the pair in Scotland as well as the ex GW/Wessex units.

I was on 786 a couple of weeks ago and at least the coach I was in now has chapman seats with the atw blue and 3 stripes seat covers, altho the first class section still remains.

786 and 789 have had the original seats removed and non standard scotrail seats fitted with what looks like arriva trains wales seat covers fitted. I believe it's because the company that made the seats fitted to scotrails 158s went bust.

Could be northern rail but they are definitely not the same as 701-725 or 726-741, I can guarantee you that mate. Same seat bases as 867,868,869,870 and 871.

786 and 789 have kind of blue, green and purple seat covers. I was told by someone at haymarket tmd it's because the company that makes the seats that are fitted to 726-741 went bust.

The 158s > 701-725 were refurbished (and very smartly too) with the same Grammer seating as used on FGWs HST, EMT & ATW 158s. The later ones > 726-741 were last refurbished by National Express's ScotRail and fitted with Rihmond seating - the same as found in several ex Northern Spirit 156s and FGW 153s (except 325,329,333,361 & 369 which is the same as...) leaves the ex Wessex ones with Chapman seats - So it sounds like they've lost their ex SWT original 158 seats and been replaced with Ex ATW Chapman seats from the ATW 158 refurb then.

867,868,869,870 and 871 were all in bad shape where they came up. I had the pleasure if working one on its maiden run after transfer up from wales. Still in its wales and west livery with wales and west interior. We failed on our first run with a loud noise and shuddering coming from the bogies underneath the cab when taking corners. The seats are the same design that are in 786 and 689 but different covers. Sounds like they are these chapman seats you speak of.

If you want to see a bad unit have a trip on 178 782. A truly shocking unit that badly needs and internal refit. Seats that I've never seen before in that unit.

Bizarre...

Remove comfy seats and replace them with an inferior product
Take it first class is the same?
Do 786 789 have pis?
Do they retain swt carpets etc?
Pics welcome! !
Haven't the ex alphaline units also received non standard seat covers? Have their carpets been touched?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Are scotrails Richmond seats as uncomfy as I expect they are?
Hopefully a refurb due

I do have the dubious pleasure of driving this complete and utter shed. The seats in that one are the very original 158 seats that they were built with.

786/789 First class remains original SWT.
Original SWT carpets
Ex Aphaline now have Scotrail (Nat EX) seat covers but Alphaline carpets. The also make random Aphaline auto announcements. The only good thing is the air con has been replaced with the Liebherr system.

These units really are quite a mess and the contrast with the refurbs just shows how a refurbishment can transform a train.
