The MP has got mixed up about what is happening in a few weeks time. The 2 car 170 services on South TPE (other than the overnight services) will become 3 car 185 services, two of the 3 car 185 diagrams will become 4 car 170 diagrams.

The problem with your idea is ATW and FGW won't be getting any extra stock next year. I suggested an alternative idea in this thread: http://railforums.co.uk/showpost.php?p=1736329&postcount=191 so I won't repeat myself here.

Well, it is all unravelling slowly. I can't wait to hear what the Minister will actually do to resolve the shortage.

Chinese built diesel units is not the answer as the ROSCOs do not want anymore diesels on their books as many will be freed up in CP5 with a rolling programme of electrification.

Time to place a bulk order for a few hundred DMU's from China, made up of a mix of 3, 4 & 5 car units for delivery by April 2015 ;)

Electrify and cascade just isn't working I'm afraid.

(Removes tongue from cheek)

As I look into the Crystal Ball the smoke clears, I see the date - July 2020, the smoke swirls and I see a vision, dozens of immaculately refurbished 319s gliding into Manchester Victoria, sidings packed full with cascaded 150s, 156s & 158s all repainted into the new 2020 Northern Livery, every diesel train in Manchester/Yorkshire/Tyneside is made up of at least 2 units, many are 3, all have new interiors, retention tank toilets and are full of smiling happy passengers.........

From the Porterbrook class 150 brochure a new accessible retention toilet is seen as something that will be fitted as standard but new seats will be an optional extra. Can we see Northern agreeing to the optional extra and paying higher leasing costs as a result?

Don't you just mean seats will be an optional extra

Well Northern's approach with the Pacers has seemed to be if a seat is broken then take it out and leave a space there. I think there might be issues with getting similar seats which meet current crash standards, so maybe if they had to fit new seats we'd see the broken seats replaced by Desiro style seating and for once people would be commenting on the high quality of the Desiro seating compared to the other Pacer seats, opposed to the firmness compared to the Sprinter seats.

The Higgins report might just blow all these thoughts out the water - it's makes reference to improving cross Pennine links between Liverpool-Manchester-Leeds-Hull which if pushed forward early enough could well mean new or partly realigned routes that would throw the current aspirations for electrifying the Huddersfield, Caldervale and Hope Valley lines.

Unlikely IMHO; but we shouldn't forget ScotRail as a possible source for 158s. 6 are due to be displaced by the Cumbernauld & Whifflet electrification schemes. Some of these are supposedly to be retained by FSR for additional services during the Inverness Kessock bridge closure and for the Commonwealth games/Ryder cup events, but will six be needed long-term? Some will be required for the Borders line and replacing the Fife 67 hauled turn, but if DfT were to lean on FSR/TS to retain the loco hauled set for another year or, so this could allow 3x 158s (782/786/789 anyone?) to head to NOR. That said, politics will come into play and who would bet against TS insisting that nothing heads south...

Given progress on the E&G wiring scheme, displaced DMUs of any sort look unlikely to be sourced from Scotland in time for TPX/NOR's crunch time from late 2015 onwards.

I guess in the short term the Fife train could carry on being loco hauled and perhaps a second one could also (there were two in operation until recently).

The only solution I can see would involve re-writing Hazel Grove to Preston and Buxton to Manchester service such that Hazel Grove to Manchester can become an electric service using stored Class 317/7s and Buxton to Preston runs as DMUs and releasing a couple of DMUs in the process.

Given that certain Buxton-Manchester and Manchester-Preston services need to be 4 cars minimum it might not release as many DMUs as you expect as running 4 cars on Buxton-Preston would mean less flexibility.
