Could any kind soul give me info on which bit of the sleeper you can just get on like a normal train. 67 hauled from Edinburgh I think it is

The Scottish sleepers all show in the ordinary timetables (227, 229 etc) as R in a white square which means reservations compulsory.

I was under the impression there was a portion of the train from Edinburgh that was seated and you could just get on like a normal train

The 0450 from Edinburgh to Fort William is the sleeper. I'm not sure if you can board at Edinburgh, but I can't see why not because it shows on the National Rail Enquiries journey planner.

Yes you can board at Edinburgh on the seated part of the Fort William sleeper.
