ATW Llandudno - Manchester idea

Considering most Sundays this service runs via altrincham,due to the engineering works. I wonder if arriva would ever consider running one train an hour on this route on a regular basis, calling at northwich knutsford Alty and Stockport? Could it be done?

Don't think it would happen because there can't really be any spare paths between Stockport & Manchester Piccadilly for a start.

And if it does ever happen, not that I think it will what would replace the services via Warrington?

Which surely leaves you facing in the Stockport direction from Manchester Piccadilly and the matter of the spare paths referred to by sonic2009.

In my limited experience of using the Llandudno-Manchesters, I find Warrington to be a major traffic centre with passengers changing into/from NW England & Scottish services.

The OP suggests 1tph going via the Mid-Cheshire line. At present, there is only 1tph going via Warrington, so this important interchange would be lost.

Big bureaucratic exercise. ATW have no access rights to call at stations between Chester and Stockport via Northwich. Re the paths, Northern cant even run trains through to Manchester Picc due do VT taking all the paths.
There is no point, really, as it would only mean duplicating services.

Totally agree.

Although it would be interesting to know how many paths are available between Stockport & Manchester Piccadilly, and the percentage divided to each TOC, both passenger & freight.

It has been suggested that VT have more than their share. Their trains increased necessitating Northerns having to be kicked out of the way.

Stockport to Picc is irrelevant, it is the throat of Picc and platforming that will eat capacity. You can run at 3 minute headways into and out of Picc.

The section between Manchester and Stockport is very busy. 14 trains an hour northbound which is a train about every 4 minuets on average. Longest time with no train is 8 minuets and yes it is a 4 track line but you have got to remember when you reach Slade lane jc you get the equally busy Airport line joining. there is really no room for any more paths.

Not forgetting the number of paths given to the container freight services that take the Styal line.
