Thief gets a lucky escape at Coventry

I was at Coventry yesterday morning and was told of this potentially fatal incident by rail staff. The 0750 LM Northampton-Birmingham pulls into platform 3. A man dashes off the train having stolen a passenger's Samsung phone. He then jumps onto the tracks between platforms 1-2, just as the 0752 VT Birmingham Intl-Euston was pulling into 1. The Pendolino managed to make an emergency stop, delaying it as a result, but the theif made a swift getaway.

The reckless stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me.

What an idiot, I wouldn't feel bad if he happened to get hit by the VT or trip on the tracks or ballast!

The train has CCTV and so does the station so hopefully he gets caught.

Just from a personal point of view I hope he gets caught, I would feel bad if he got hit by a train. It is easy to dehumanise someone you can't relate to.

As much as I hope he gets caught and severely punished for theft and trespass, I wouldn't want that to happen to him or anyone. :? He is a person still, criminal or not...

Ok you're right that it's quite OTT to wish death on a thief, I'd just like to see this guy suffer the same pain that the victim did from losing their phone!

I was supposed to be on that train yesterday, however having missed that train at International, I caught the LM train few minutes later. According to RealTimeTrains, it seems it was delayed by 40 minutes upon arrival at Euston, is this due to the emergency stop?

Nevertheless, this is something I could expect seeing it's Coventry, I've seen a man getting arrested by the police for being violent few weeks ago.

I've seen violent people be arrested in Birmingham, doesn't mean I expect things like this there. Just because a small minority of people from Coventry are utter idiots (which is the case everywhere), it doesn't make everyone from Coventry like that.

I've seen people get arrested for things in Oxford. Still a great place to go, and so is Coventry.

Hopefully this incident results in his capture.

That post is inconsiderate on the grounds that it would not only affect over 50 staff but hundreds of passengers. Just shows how narrow minded some are on here. (Sorry if this post offends but we all need to have our say and opinions)

Interesting, we had a cable thief try to jump from one viaduct to another, who missed and fell down the side landing himself in hospital.

His cutting the signal cables meant all services in the morning peak were cancelled, but the general view of most commuters that morning was to break laughing at the 'good' news.

Its a shame and I can understand people being annoyed by someone taking a risk messing up their entire day. I'm not sure a very gory death sentence is the answer though. We are all a couple of pay days away from destitution. There are desperate people out there.

I agree with urban gateline. I have been to plenty of fatalities, some desperate people wanting out and some being people who were on the railway up to no good but if someone is stupid enough to jump off a platform I would have no sympathy for them, only the people having to clear up the mess. Enough people were inconvenienced as it was.

I don't think they're standing up for the thief, they don't want a person to die.

Personally, I'm glad he didn't get killed, not least for the driver's sake. Could've been a fatality and a lot of trauma, all thanks to some idiot stealing a poxy bloody 'phone...

I'm not standing up for a thief, I just don't think that death is an appropriate penalty for dipping peoples pockets. Hows about I say that I will laugh at anyone killed on the roads who breaks the speed limit or doesn't indicate.

I don’t think anyone is standing up for a criminal. What they are doing is suggesting it may be a little over zealous to wish death on someone for stealing a phone. Perhaps transportation would be a better option.
