Maglev here we come! (BNP 2010 manifesto)

Nobody can say the British National Party is backward-looking - in their environmental policies they promise to:

"Invest in a high-speed, magnetic levitation, inter-city rail network"

None of this HS2 rubbish then. And a whole network, not just a test track or small suburban line!

I'm sure their intellectual elite have carried out an exhaustive feasibility study and are up to speed with the latest technical developments in this field.

Yes, points have been solved by the Japanese and Germans and are currently in use in Shanghai on the airport run.

They are very slow for diverging routes compared to conventional rail points but the train is so fast accelerating it makes little difference.

One thing to remember is the BNP have no experience of power so they can promise whatever they want and it has very little chance of succeeding.

Is a maglev network feasible is this country though? Me thinks no.

Would it be feasible to combine maglev tracks with conventional ones, so that both types of service can be run?

No less than in Japan - where the Chuo Shinkansen has finally been committed to construction.

Is it worth the cost however? Doubtful.

Bit surprised that the BNP should favour Maglev. Although it was invented in Britain, and reached the giddy speed of about 10mph in Birmingham, it's the Germans and the Japanese who have got closest to making it a viable long-distance transport mode.

I'd doubt it, they've almost collapsed as a political party and are likely to lose their one MEP and two councillors in May. Not through a lack of racists; rather through a total lack of organisational ability
