Weather related disruption - Christmas 2013 and New Year 2014

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Southern Metro will be operating normally tomorrow. I have to use the Outer SLL to Balham tomorrow morning and with various station closures because of tomorrow's tube strike, which include Canada Water, the ELL isn't an alternative option to connect with the Jubilee and Northern lines.

Doesn't look like things are going to be fun in South Devon tonight as it's not just Dawlish suffering either - Cockwood Harbours now also suffering flooding and I gather that the tide's almost up to rail level. Looks like the Anchor Inn's going to suffer too (great pub if your over that way in the dry!)

Which MP has blamed the money being spent on HS2 as being the reason not enough money has been spent on making sure the railway can cope with bad weather (in particular the coastal stretch along Dawlish)?

And the BBC reporter questioning why it could take six weeks - despite the BBC showing the photos which suggest it won't take six hours!

I expect he thinks that once the weather improves they'll be able to make the tide go out, and then stay out, while they work on the problem in a nice dry environment.

And of course we can start to blame the Government for not predicting all of the places likely to be badly hit. Okay, so Dawlish is perhaps rather high up on the list, but at the same time - how many times has it been badly damaged before?

Besides the spectacular photos of the water splashing up and over, has it ever collapsed before? If not, could Network Rail have justified huge sums of taxpayer money to rebuild and strengthen, and then when it wasn't hit by huge storms, be accused of wasting money that could have been better spent building HS2.... !

How far from the railhead at Oakhampton to Bere Alston and could a reconnected line carry the same amount of Passengers and Freight? What would a ball park figure be to do the job from Exeter to Plymouth vis a vis a cut off for Dawlish?

Anything against HS2 at the moment. If they want to wait till 2018 for a solution then they can feel free!

All lines blocked Eastbourne - Hastings - tide is getting higher and the weather is getting worse here quickly. Line runs close to the sea between Pevensey and Cooden and again from Bexhill to Bo Peep Junction and what with the wind, there is a real risk of flooding, not to mention stones from the beach being blown onto the railway line.

The line is already blocked at Whiteball for planned 3 week engineering works. The units 'stuck' have been 'stuck' doing shuttles as a result of that anyway surely?

If the units fail down in Cornwall or are due for maintenance before the line reopens there may be some relevance, but as you say at present should be fine.
On the shuttles note there is already disruption within Cornwall itself, which would be limiting there use surely.

Could simply be something else has gone bank somewhere and having 4 sets down there is just making things that bit more interesting. im glad I found the info on the see wall going, was about to book a bashing trip for March to scratch off cornish Branches, do some WG Bus bashing and get a cupple of rides on the sleaper. Said MP makes a valuable point, the country is prepared to write a blank cheque for HS2 which IMHO will help to develop only London, whilst the south west is forgotten about and can only dream of a diversionary route between Exeter and Plymouth.

Why is so much government cash/assistance given to certain parts of the country, when the already deprived west country seems to get nothing.

The answer is that Scotland/The North/ Wales all shout louder.
