The Emirates Air Line finally justifies itself… maybe

I've noticed that on this webpage about the upcoming tube strikes, TfL say that the cable car will be accepting LU tickets – a measure I've not seen in place before for any reason. This makes it the first time I've ever had reason to think of the cable car as anything other than a bizarrely funded tourist attraction, although seeing as TfL say the Jubilee line will be getting a five-minutely service between Stratford and Waterloo, it remains to be seen how much extra use the ticket acceptance gets the cable car.

I wouldn't believe what TfL say with regards to the Jubilee Line. From what I've heard from a friend (he's a driver on the Met line) a lot of drivers will also be going out and supporting station staff. How true that is remains to be seen though.

Jubilee seems to be managing a 10 minute service if the live departure boards are anything to go by.

The dangleway could perhaps be finally proving useful, but instead there is "No service on the Emirates Airline due to adverse weather conditions."

Somehow I had a feeling this would happen (thanks to Sods Law) :D

Haha, brilliant timing. Seems to happen quite often – yet another reason why it's useless as a transport method. I retract this whole thread.

Well that was a storm in a teacup (or is that cable car?)

Even Waterstones were surprised to see the cable car suggested as a tube alternative a couple of days ago:

Aargh! Tube strike! Cue panic in the streets of London as the capital’s inhabitants half-heartedly attempt to make it into the office – before giving up after a respectable period of time to “work from home.” So, we’ve pulled together a few books to help you valiant Londoners on your journeys tomorrow. Simply choose your mode of transport to see the book you should be reading to keep the wheels of industry turning.

Emirates Air Line

Really? Why is this even listed on the TFL website? Who uses this to get to work? Perhaps one person?

Irony is, they weren't far from the truth! (I think the figure was about eight…?)

If you read on,

Waterstones said:
Well, whoever they are, they will be ecstatic to hear that the service will operate as normal.

Em, no they are not. Not any more at least. :p

Well, I've suspended all belief that it'll ever be useful.

On a vaguely related note, I've just seen this about a local residents' discount trial, which is valid on Oyster too. I wonder how that'll work – will it actually be loaded on to an Oyster like a railcard discount I wonder?

Ba dum tsh

It will only be useful if/when it gets incorporated into the Travelcard. If/when it does get incorporated into the travelcard I'd suggest some sort of tourist pack be made available at £5 or so. The pack would include a guide book with the history of things you can see from the Air Line as well as some coupons for restaurants/museums that are only obtainable through there.

The link is dead, results in a 404 error page.

Hmm, odd. At a guess it was published early then retracted – maybe keep an eye on the link and perhaps it'll become live again tomorrow.

Possibly! An early release, maybe and you just happened to find it.

I believe it's a 50% discount on cash and PAYG fares for residents of Newham and Greenwich. Presumably proof of residence is all that's needed. Mid February until end of the year.
