Probably an engine not working on your carriage, they can and do run with 1 or 2 engines not working.

Yeah I've seen that happen quite a lot. I've also seen it happen on a 185 where a unit enters a platform with clearly one engine shut down, and then it powers up whilst in the platform and departs on all three engines. Not sure what that's about.

It happens on 185s all the time, i believe they have eco mode settings. Basically only use 3 when going full pelt uphill between Leeds and Manc, rest of the time 2 engines is sufficient even to get to 100 on ECML.

I went on one last Sunday, sat in first class and have got to admit the vibration wasn't too bad at all. At 80mph plus, it was a calming hum actually. That said, the fc seats are nowhere near as big as most Intercity first class seats so it was still not as comfortable as say, a Meridian. Seems to vary per set on the vibration side, most of the time it really does get on my nerves after a little while.

Yeah, apparently TPE claim that the diesel saved from eco mode on the 185s is enough to power the whole class 170 fleet. I think they forget that's only 9 units!!:)

I thought one engine on each XC 220/221 had been turned off to save fuel?

220s run on 4/4 and 221s run on 4/5. It's usually the middle coach on 221s that is turned off. It's bought back to life during leaf fall season to provide extra grip though.
