Why do most football fans that I know denigrate an interest in all things rail? I was once told it was a form of jealously - anybody can sit and watch a football match, but it requires effort to build a model.

Odd thing to post. Most people under 40 these days denigrate an interest in rail. It has a stigma, full stop. What have football fans got to do with it, unless that's just an equal and opposite stigma about football fans coming through?

I think most people do, it's a hobby up there with morris dancing, voting Liberal and crochet.

If you want a lifetime of ridicule it's the go-to interest.

When I was in the Met one day at Windsor Princess Anne even had a small Royal snigger about it.

The number of friends and relatives that ask for " a go " on my model layout when they visit does rather contradict the presumption about the perceived antipathy towards an interest in railways.

I also have had a season ticket for my local football club for over 25 years - this causes more sniggering than playing with trains ever does.

Great to see you've decided to ignore the football thead on here that currently has 11751 posts which I would guess is the biggest ever thread on this board.

There was a thread on a football forum I read, wondering why some people would play some of the more unsusual simulator games, such as 'Street Sweeping Simulator'.
One member then said that he rather enjoyed a game of Train Simulator, and was fascinated by trains. Another poster, in an attempt to embarrass the first, 'dedicated' the well-known YouTube song 'I Like Trains' to him.
However, the thread soon exploded into life as dozens of others piled in, declaring their interest in trains and railways, posting photos of their favourite locos etc., until, after three pages, the original poster said 'What the **** have I started? OK, OK, I give in!'

I don't think there is any correlation between whether someone is a football fan, and whether someone likes railway.

I agree, a lot of people find it a hobby to poke fun at but I doubt football fans are any better or worse.

What I have found though is bus fans seem to be even more derided but plane enthusiasts are possibly put a bit higher.

The trouble is so many people automatically assume it's "trainspotting" and number chasing which is probably something that you give-up as you get older (with exceptions)

I remember chasing all over the place to cop a certain "Warship"and a certain "Peak" seems barmy now but it's what you did then.

If people want to collect bus/train/plane numbers etc. it's better than going out daubing graffiti and generally being an idiot.

I've never written down a number ever, unless it appears in a photo and I name my photo accordingly.
I just enjoy all forms of travel pretty much, I'll be just as happy taking a trip on a cross channel ferry, train, bus and so on.

I can't. Boredom sets in during the first five minutes. It's not a problem watching unless you find it dull and tedious.

I agree anyone can watch a football match in being a valid statement, however not everyone will enjoy it.

eh? :?:?:? Confused

Perhaps you could offer me some advice, you see i like both things ( and many more!) so i must be undergoing some massive internal conflict!

I cant really see a direct link between the two subjects in the manner you suggest

Is this really a bigger problem among football fans, than society in general? I very much doubt it.

Probably because both have minority groups which take both of their respective 'hobbies' way too seriously and likes repel, hence the denigration.

My dad and little brother are football fans, my dad also used to bash Class 50s and gives me enough money for a day out when they go to the football :P

I think you'll find a significant number of football fans on this very forum.

....and a massively-long Football thread to prove your point.

Many a true word is spoken in jest. However, I do regret the decision taken to end the production of future issues of both the "Last of the Summer Wine" and the "Time Team" series...

I think everyone from last of the summer wine is now dead arent they? And it stopped being funny a long time ago... Time team was a good watch but they are repeated on the Yesterday channel.

You have no need to justify yourself to anyone. Just do what you enjoy and as long as you have fun and it harms no one then there is no problem. I support a football team, I love the railways, I like death metal music, I like all manner of other things as well.

Don't judge people, you are doing to them exactly what you accuse them of doing to you.

Not everyone can watch a football match and this is coming from someone who has watches at least 70 matches a season. I've endured boredom at football matches that most people would not begin to comprehend. At least 30% of the games I see every season bore me. I can go several weeks without seeing a good match out of sheer bad luck then go and watch 5 or 6 cracking games in a row. Watching 7 matches in a weekend in Estonia is asking for it (should be considered a form of torture by the UN I reckon!!) Estonian football would bore most people senseless. I put a tremendous amount of effort in my football seasons, I will probably spend 1000 hours this season, at the very minimum planning my trips and going on them all. Add in my European Football Weekends as well and it stacks up! My most recent trip was deciding to do a 190 mile trip at 10 hours notice, leave house at 8am the following morning, back at 7am the next. Not everyone can do what I do and neither would I expect them too, I'd rather do other hobbies at times but would I swap the pleasure I get out of it for anything? No. I spend a couple of k a season on weekends away, days out, train tickets, match tickets, merchandise at foreign grounds, food/drink on trips. And yet I have to take a huge interest in rail, to keep costs down and make things run as smoothly as possible. Rail comes in hand with my football watching, it's impossible not to take an interest. Don't assume football followers are dimwits, I don't note numbers down or do models, my railway interest is ticketing and general interest - knowing timetables off top of my head, lines. Railways and football come in very handy geography wise. There's not many people at 21 who've heard of some of my destinations, let alone point them out on a map!
