Megatrain and Victoria line delay

A friend of mine travelled from Sheffield to Brighton as folllows:

• Sheffield to London on a megatrain ticket

,

• St Pancras to Victoria on Oyster (allowing one hour)

,

• Victoria to Brighton on an advance ticket

The Victoria line problems the other day meant that the train to Brighton was missed and my friend was asked at Victoria to buy a new ticket.

If the delay had been on the Megatrain rather than tube would that have allowed my friend to get a later train to Brighton?
How best to book this journey next time to be covered for delays in London?

Were they actually stuck on one of the trains? I can't see how otherwise a journey from St Pancras to Victoria [in that direction] would take over an hour when going via the alternative route.

Secondly, was the Advance from Victoria to Brighton bought from the Southern website and not collected? If so, then they can claim for a full refund (no fees) under the Southern Money back guarantee (formerly Rainy day guarantee).

There was some confusion but on the suggestion of a fellow passenger, they took a bus for part of the journey having been on the Victoria line for part of the journey.
