I was really being tounge in cheek about claiming the taxi fare as I know we've got next to no chance of getting that back. And we didn't ask to detrain at Durham, that was what we just decided to do, figuring that we'd miss less of the match than by going on to Newcastle and getting the metro across. The way things were going I was thinking to myself that it would be just our luck to be told to buy new tickets for detraining early on an advance, even though we were no longer on the booked train. In the event the barriers at Durham were open so we went straight through.
Train was due at Durham at 12.22 and after finding our pre-booked taxi and setting off we eventually got into the ground at 13.00. One point that bugs me is that if we'd been allowed on the 9.00 there would have been no delay repayments due as we would have got to the Stadium Of Light metro by around 12.30 at the latest so wouldn't have been delayed by more than an hour.
After the match we got back to Sunderland station to find the 15.29 Grand Central was cancelled! We were told to go to Newcastle and take the 16.26 East Coast. Got the 15.30 Northern Rail and got to Newcastle in time for the 15.59 East Coast, but we weren't allowed on that one despite arguing with the despatcher and guard that we would get back to the cross at the same time as the 15.29 GC, had it been running-their argument was the 16.26 and the 16.59 were the trains that EC had agreed to carry GC passengers on.
Got back to the cross at 19.40, went round to St Pancras to get the 19.54 FCC directly back to East Croydon........yes, it wasn't running!
Wasn't a train timed to arrive at 11.50 cutting it a bit fine for a 12.45 kick-off?
Trains sometimes run late you know......
I do take your point and whilst we've been delayed on Grand Central before it is, of course, usually fine when the k/o is 3.00pm. It was just our luck that this had to happen on the occasion that we'd been picked for the 12.45 game. In fact we had a 12.45 game where we were delayed last season, although in that case we got in at around 12.20 and were still in the ground in time for kick off.
It's not going to be a good day for you all round then......
Howay the lads
How right you were! In the event, apart from forcing a draw after being 2-0 down, the highlight of the day was probably meeting Liam!
