London - Southampton - East Croydon

Firstly, if I get a return London Terminals to Southampton Central would I be able to finish the return journey at East Croydon?

If the answer to that is yes, would I be restricted to the direct (but slow) service on Southern, or could I go via changing at Clapham Junction which is faster?

Out 3 Feb, return 4 Feb.

The answer to the first part is certainly yes.

You can either purchase the Off Peak Return (SVR) routed Any Permitted, which is valid on any operator on any permitted route, for £42.40 or alternatively you can purchase the SVR routed Southern Only, which is only valid on trains operated by Southern (ie: not SWT) for £34.50

Are you wanting to travel:

London (where in London?) - Southampton, followed by Southampton - East Croydon?

Will you need to get back from East Croydon to London?

Do you hold any Railcards and do you have any existing tickets (e.g. a Season/Travelcard?)

Southampton - Basingstoke - Woking - Clapham Junction - East Croydon - London Bridge (etc) is not a permitted route between Southampton Group and London Group. Someone may be able to force National Rail Enquiries to produce such an itinerary using one ticket, but until then, it is not permitted AFAIK. If you want to finish short at East Croydon, you need to go along the coast first and then via Horsham/Haywards Heath.

I'll be travelling London Waterloo - Southampton, then Southampton - East Croydon for the return.

So looks like I'll get the £42.40 any operator ticket, travel direct on the outward leg, then trundle along the coast on Southern for the return.

I won't need to return to London until the day following my return from Southampton (i.e. having broken the journey at East Croydon and stayed there overnight). Would the ticket still be valid the following day?

Then you are best with the £42.40 ticket, which is valid to return within a month.

One more question. The final East Croydon - London Terminals leg would be in the morning peak, so I'm guessing the £42.40 ticket would not be valid at that time?

Not until trains scheduled to arrive at the London Terminal (including Vauxhall and in this case, Clapham Junction too) after 1000.

On the return leg, you can't use the £42.40 on a train arriving at London Terminals before 1000 (Mon-Fri). Restriction code is US.

If you wish to do:

London Waterloo - Southampton (via Woking)
Southampton - East Croydon (via Woking, changing at Clapham Jn)
East Croydon - London Waterloo/Victoria (at peak time)

Then you might be best with a £40.80 Off Peak Return from East Croydon to Southampton routed Not via London, with a change of route excess on the outward portion to +Any Permitted (the excess would cost £2.80), and for the final leg use Oyster PAYG (£4.80).

Are you starting and finishing at London Waterloo, and hold no other tickets to get to/from Waterloo (ie, you live locally or are travelling by bus etc)?

I'm starting at Waterloo (getting there by bus) and finishing next day at Victoria (no further onward transport required).

The change of route excess on the outward leg sounds a good idea. I imagine these are only obtainable at a ticket office?

In your case, the practicable answer is yes only from the ticket office.

You cannot get a change of route excess online.

They are available on board for no additional cost, where appropriate, however in the case of an East Croydon - Southampton ticket, a route: Not via London ticket would of course need to be excessed to route: Any Permitted before you could enter the gateline at Waterloo.

Only the outward portion need be excessed, which is HALF the difference.

If the OP was happy to travel via Barnham on the way back then you could always purchase :

East Croydon to Southampton Central Route via Barnham Off Peak Return £29.30.

Excess the outward portion to + Any Permitted this would cost £8.55
