Yes, it is a short distance by comparison with Swindon-Gloucester/Cheltenham or the Cotswold Line, but as I have previously pointed out, the reason that most FGW HSTs go to Weston now is not because of huge demand for through travel to and from London but because they provide a lot of extra capacity to handle commuters going to and from Bristol, from Weston and the likes of Yatton and Nailsea & Backwell. Just look at the service pattern.

From Weston on weekday mornings they are roughly half-hourly to Bristol and on to London from 06.20 until 07.50 Two of which start back at Exeter and Taunton, so not great for electric traction, even if Weston were wired, then a 09.29 call by a service from Paignton to Paddington, then nothing until 17.10, 18.08 and a 22.01 call by a Taunton-London train.

The first HST from London to Weston on a weekday leaves Bristol TM at 11.40 - the Torbay 'Express'. The next HST from Bristol is at 16.15, then 17.15, 18.14, 19.12, 20.13 and 21.15, plus a 23.32 departure on an HST bound for Exeter. On Saturdays the first HST out of Bristol is at 18.18, with four more in the evening, two of these going on to Taunton

And yet this lop-sided, patchy service, with about half the trains starting or terminating at Taunton and in Devon, or using marginal time at the start or end of journeys for what are fundamentally London-Bristol trains, is supposed to justify wiring to Weston... sorry, but this one is just going to have to wait, even if, in Rhydgaled-land, they just should electrify this instant. I suppose 600-plus seats per train would be handy for the commuters of North Somerset, but with an influx of Turbos to boost capacity in the Bristol area pending further electrification, will many IEPs be needed south of Temple Meads anyway?

Which is kinda the point, even with electrification to the next point there's still need for bi-modal trains.

A quick Google suggests that in 2010, an electric train costs 66p per mile to maintain and run, vs 107p for a diesel train - the track access costs are 11.85 p for Mk4 carriages vs 10.55p for a 222 car, plus 40.58p per Class 91, 11.67p per DVT - mix in the (by then) cheaper rental cost of an end of life 225. Well you can do the sums, but I'd say the cost of fuel is the swing factor and would make (without adding prices up as I sit on my 142 travelling to Leeds) pretty similar for running a full length 225 vs a 5 car 222



Why wait, if you have electric express trains to cascade to part of a route, means you can displace earlier part of a fleet of Meridians to either service a demand elsewhere on the MML or help out elsewhere, Liverpool to Nottingham or perhaps CrossCountry - are you seriously suggesting that the 225's would just sit idle for a few years whilst diesels run under wires ?

As the cost is likely to be the same for a full length 225 then if you shortened them from 9+2 to 8+2 by removing coach M the capacity of them would only fall a little from 406/129 first class to 406/83 first class. If that wasn't quite enough first class you could reverse coach H and have 376/103 first class. Whilst at the same time as reducing the overall cost it would overcome some of the potential problems with acceleration

It would also leave about 63 coaches (assuming that the MML has 27 sets of 8) which Chiltern could then use rather than having to spend a lot of money to use Mark 3's. Which could be 9 sets of 7 coaches or 10 sets of 6 coaches, either way enough to provide them with the possibility of a lot more seats on there network.

But surely the DfT would be looking to build five coach units from the start? In terms of longer trains this will always be restricted by the length of the platforms at St Pancras and split units would seem to be the sensible option for the off peak.
Once the MML is electrified the replacement stock will almost certainly be fixed length 10-car 23m or 9-car IEP; they'll only go for 5-car sets if they plan to run splitting/joining services (which I can't necessarily see happening either). Running short formations off-peak makes a big dent in the diesel bill but a much smaller saving on the electricity bill, and for the trade off of not having to worry about crewing & catering across paired sets it just doesn't make sense.

We are agreeing with each other, as I'm saying if the next point (Weston) gets wired then there's still a need for trains beyond there and therefore we still need bi-modal to be built.

If we were able (by waving a magic wand, as there would be no other way that it could possibly be done) to get wiring to Paighton and Plymouth in time then there could be an argument for not having bi-modal trains for routes south of Bristol.

However you then make the case for bi-modal trains along the B&H and into Cornwall a lot better, which means that you'd have to get the wand waved again to electrify all of that as well. Which then leads to the question of why not just get the wand waved to do away with diesel traction all together on the network, including making it so robust that power failures almost never happen. As otherwise there'll always be the next point along some line or another where bi-modal would be advantageous.

Also, off peak you can always fill up your longer sets by selling more advance tickets and hope you make up shortfall on the regular travellers who benefit by selling a bit more in the way of catering.

I don't believe for one second that anyone believes that electric traction is not more efficient than diesel units. The point is by using full length 225's during the off peak on the MML you will be carting around a lot of empty seats.

In affect what you are proposing is to potentially force people to stand during peak periods in order to make the 225's look good. Or lose out on premium rate revenue. Would it not make more sense to transfer the 225's to a more suitable route and purchase fast accelerating EMU's for the MML? Let's try not fitting a square peg into a round hole shall we?

Please explain why you think the EMU'S ordered for the MML will be any different in length to the Meridians currently operating on the MML? Given the frequency of the current timetable five car units are more than adequate for the off peak and are easily doubled up during the peak. The whole point is you are not wasting capacity or incurring pointless access charges. I would have thought that the crewing and catering costs are pretty minimal on a full peak time train.

I'm not really sure that the East Midlands to London market is that elastic. I've never travelled on an off peak MML service which appears to be fully booked. I'm not convinced that you could ever fill a nine coach off peak service between Sheffield and London.

We may agree to a degree but I simply don't see Weston being viable as a 'next point' to go to at all, when so many of the trains serving Weston, not just those HSTs, run to and from places further west and would have to remain diesel-worked unless you wire to Taunton and beyond. Weston is really a bit of a red herring when it comes to electrification, because of its supposed 'London' services, which are largely about meeting local commuting needs.

It's just another example of why decisions on whether to start wiring XC's routes from 2020 or so are so important for future extensions of electric services on the Great Western and to other services that could benefit, such as Birmingham-Hereford and Birmingham-Cardiff.

I wasn't saying that Weston should be the next point, rather even IF it were to be the next point to be wired up, that there would be another point which was needed to be wired up to avoid the need for bi-modal trains.

I agree that XC should be the next proirity, as I've stated elsewhere:

Given that by 2020 a fair amount of the XC rail network will have wires on it, although only the Manchester to South Coast route will be able to run as EMU's. What is likely to be the proirity for wiring up the gaps and what new XC services may their be?

My thoughts are that the following routes should be fairly high up the list as they remove a lot DMU's from under the wires for only about 210 miles of electrification. The two routes York/Sheffield (about 45 miles) and wire up Derby/Birmingham (about 40 miles) and wire up the routes between Birmingham/Bristol and Cardiff (about 125 miles) and then the following XC services would be run as EMU services:
- (Southampton) Reading to Newcastle (85 miles of wires)
- (Cardiff) Bristol Temple Meads to Manchester Piccadilly (125 miles of wires, assuming both the route to Bristol and the more direct route to Cardiff)
- Bournemouth to Manchester Piccadilly (CP5 scheme)
- Cardiff Central to Nottingham (165 miles of wires, although this is milage which is included in the routes above, so is efectively "free")

The other CP6 proirities should look at infil schemes to remove other DMU services from long runs of under wire running. Possibly with one or two long routes which frees up a lot of DMU's, although the proirity for this would be if they then enable more infill schemes to be undertaken in CP7 as well as the removal of a lot of DMU's.

You have no point at all - if it costs no more to run a full 225 train than a 222 unit, it doesn't matter if seats are empty.

No, I'm not suggesting bi-modes - that would involve new units. To clarify, logic suggests that you would use the old 225 trains on the sections that are electrified - the whole task of wiring the MML will take a number of years, so in the period it takes to do the work you gradually increase the number of 225's as they are released from ECML to replace 222's so they can then be moved elsewhere.

Furthermore leasing costs are higher since ROSCOs charge more for the ex-BR stuff as it has a shorter life and they want to get their money from it

Because, as has been said previously, they are a small class, to an unusual design, expensive to maintain, and the first ones built will be 30 years old by the time IEP arrives on the East Coast. The very reasons that their owner has contemplated buying new locomotives to replace them.

If the glorious market that we are told is amazing is actually working as well as we are assured it is then the leasing charges for a 91+Mark 4 set should be drastically lower than a 222 specifically because it is old stock nearing the end of its life.

Ofcourse we know this is not the case from the obvious exemplar of that 30s tube stock on the Isle of Wight....

Let's just rewind here - yep, they are old, yep, small fleet, yep, costly to maintain (I'll accept what you say on that). However, the thread above was looking for a last use for the 225 fleet - which considering the IEP will slowly displace the 225 fleet on the ECML over about two years, it's a reasonable chance that a follow on IEP order will come through for the MML, so these won't start getting built until the ECML orders are finished, alternatively a new design will introduce a few years delay on replacement - in the mean time, something has to take advantage of the new wires on the MML - The 225 fleet is it, a new small fleet of electric locos for a 30 odd year of fleet of Mk4's is as silly as running diesels under wires on the MML when a fleet of electric locos that lots of people are arguing to keep (because they have life in them) are sat doing nothing.

My understanding of EMT's declared position is that it wants new emu-type trains, presumably from day one, not someone else's 30-year-old cast-offs that will, in their final months on East Coast, most likely get just enough attention to keep them going, so would hardly be likely to herald a bright, shiny future for EMT if they were to turn up at St Pancras in that condition - and is it worth putting the trains through the shops for overhaul, interior refurbishment and a new livery if it's so they can be used for 'about two years'?

The way people are talking on here I anticipate IEP will be scrapped in 2030 as they will be considered old.

My understanding of EMT's declared position is that it wants new emu-type trains, presumably from day one

The EMT franchise expires in around three years AFAICR; the line to Sheffield may not be completed until 2020. So I'm not sure what bearing their opinion on new EMUs has.

Given the current 80x fleet order will be built 2015-2019, you've an opportunity for at least 3 electric express units on the MML by 2017, a further 3-4 by 2018, several more by 2019, more by 2020. By 2019, Hitachi will have completed the initial order and it's not unreasonable that some extra sets might be required for ECML & GWML, plus some teething issues and production delays to resolve , so by 2020, production starts on 80x sets for MML, taking a couple of years to complete, we are at 2022, so that's potentially 5-6 years for the 225 sets to be useful in a MML franchise. That's assuming that CrossCountry ridership hasn't escalated to such a degree that a follow on order isn't for them rather than MML.

Lot of if's and but's there, if the MML does get IEP and if MML does get electrified in those timescales it may make more sense either try and get Hitachi to make the MML units ahead of the 225 replacements or to get Network rail to delay the MML Electrification in favour of other routes.

Im not convinced MML will be getting IEP anyway

Lots of if's yes... The orders are currently for ECML & GWML, but given there's an election in 2015, it wouldn't take much for the powers that be after the election to place pressure on the DfT to rethink, perhaps keep the 225 fleet and introduce bimodes only on the ECML to replace the HST's and slowly bring in the Class 801 electric units to the MML, especially as the ECML units are being delivered later in the programme which means the depot upgrades will happen later too.

Although having said that, the original spec suggests MML & XC use for IEP, but I also wouldn't be at all surprised with a IEP2 PFI hitting the rumour mill in about 2016 ish, open to whoever takes up the gauntlet. Just because Hitachi is building a factory and 100's of new carriages, doesn't guarantee any further Class 800 & 801 orders, but surely it would make some sense... Oh, hold on... The DfT are involved ;)

No, that's not the point I was trying to make. Bi-mode is bad on most Intercity routes. I was trying to use the fact Virgin have or had plans to replace Voyagers with dragged EMUs to support my argument that dragged EMUs is a viable solution to the problem of partially electrified routes. This despite Virgin's circumstances being less favorable to dragging EMUs than East Coast's.

Anybody would think that the way you talk that there will be loads hybrid IEP on the East Coast when in reality the majority will be electric and those that are hybrid will be roughly equivalent to 18 HST's (13 nine car and 5 x 2 five car) as opposed to the 15 HST's the East Coast is currently using.
East Coast's fleet is 14 IC125s isn't it? Of those 14, 13 are diagramed, of those 13, 3 spend the entire diagram under the wires. So IEP brings an increase in the number of trains for diesel routes despite the current operator having a shortage of electrics and having to use diesels to make up for it.

you can talk to Network Rail about blocking their platforms for 10 to 15 min's while you mess about trying to attach a Loco.
It will not take 10 to 15 minutes the couple a loco to an EMU. The nine minutes claimed by the department for transport would probably be enough to take an electric loco off a train and replace it with a diesel one, assuming they have suitable fast couplers. How fast did the spec say an IEP should be able to couple/decouple to another IEP? You just need to fit the loco with a suitable coupler so the IEP thinks the loco is another IEP.

The department for transport, in announcing that IC225s would be replaced by IEPs on the East Coast. In my opinion, that effectively means 91s will be scrapped (or, if they're lucky, preserved or exported), as I cannot see them being useful elsewhere in the UK given that Great Western is also getting IEPs for all it's electrified routes.

This opinion is based on information I have read on here in the past, that class 90s (110mph top speed) can keep time on some East Coast services with more stops. Therefore, I doubt a 91 will be able to keep time on any route currently served by class 90s or high-powered DMUs (Voyager family, 185 etc.) unless there is potential for significant amounts of linespeeds in excess of 120mph.

That rules out:
  • London to Norwich (max speed 110mph, or maybe even less)
  • Liverpool to Newcastle (not much, if any, running over 110mph)
  • Manchester to Glasgow/ Edinburgh? (if there's anything over 110mph on the WCML, it is for tilting trains only)
Sheffield/Nottingham to London has just recevied some 125mph running, but is it going to be enough to enable a 91+9+DVT to keep to class 222 timings? Manchester to Southampton I don't know, is there any potential for 125mph running without tilt? I doubt it.

Also is the 225's were to be reduced in length by 1 coach then the acceleration issue would be less of a problem.
Indeed, that might actually tip the balance. But, might you need the capacity provided by the coach you take out? And what would you do with the 30 extra spare coaches? Not enough to replace the London-Norwich mark3s, but you might find the odd job for them.

Two points:
  1. No, not quite my point. My point was wire to Weston-Super-Mare to reduce the number of bi-modes that need to be built, (as opposed to eliminating them entirely) rather than building more bi-modes and using it as an excuse not to electrify to Weston-Super-Mare in the 2020-2024 control period.
  2. You can still run services to Taunton and Devon/Cornwall, use an IC125 via Westbury (as they are planning to do anyway).

But you need the long train right? You couldn't replace the London service with a Taunton-Bristol 166/165 or 180 service could you? An hourly 8-coach Intercity service is enough to justify electrification (provided the stretch to be electrified isn't too long) in my view.

Why buy new traction when the 91's are proven to work with the Mk4's ?
Because, as has been said previously, they are a small class, to an unusual design, expensive to maintain, and the first ones built will be 30 years old by the time IEP arrives on the East Coast. The very reasons that their owner has contemplated buying new locomotives to replace them.
Personally, I think the reasons Eversholt are offering an option of replacing the 91s with TraXX (alongside a class 91 refurbishment option) are actually:
  1. the 91's comparatively sluggish acceleration and
  2. (possibly) regenerative brakes (which, sadly, I assume they have decided isn't worth fitting to a 91 for the 10-15yrs they would likely continue for if Eversholt's refurbishment option is implemented).
If I recall correctly, there was a peice in Modern Railways indicating that the full IEP would raise East Coast's rolling stock costs so much that it might wipe out the profits/premiums East Coast current makes completely. If 91s are expensive to maintain (and why would they be more expensive to maintain than anything else?) then I don't like to think what word you could use in place of 'expensive' to refer to IEP.

In addition the Traxx version offered has a diesel generator. Also it may very well be useful for freight services (if regeared) after the coaches are withdrawn.

No, that's not the point I was trying to make. Bi-mode is bad on most Intercity routes. I was trying to use the fact Virgin have or had plans to replace Voyagers with dragged EMUs to support my argument that dragged EMUs is a viable solution to the problem of partially electrified routes. This despite Virgin's circumstances being less favorable to dragging EMUs than East Coast's.

Dft seem to think its significantly more expensive, and its certainly less flexible, I wonder if virgin still think that having got rid of their 57's

East Coast's fleet is 14 IC125s isn't it? Of those 14, 13 are diagramed, of those 13, 3 spend the entire diagram under the wires. So IEP brings an increase in the number of trains for diesel routes despite the current operator having a shortage of electrics and having to use diesels to make up for it.

I believe its 15 at the moment with a MML set on hire. So what if there are more hybrids than current diesels that gives more flexibility but the key point is the hybrids will be electric over the electrified section while the diesels wont.

It will not take 10 to 15 minutes the couple a loco to an EMU. The nine minutes claimed by the department for transport would probably be enough to take an electric loco off a train and replace it with a diesel one, assuming they have suitable fast couplers. How fast did the spec say an IEP should be able to couple/decouple to another IEP? You just need to fit the loco with a suitable coupler so the IEP thinks the loco is another IEP.

Yes that's connecting two identical units, I don't see a 57 connecting to a Pendolino being particularly quick. In any case what are these loco's will they be specially built or modified existing, how much is that going to cost in either case, presumably if they are going to pull sleeper stock as well they will need a retractable coupler like a 57, will a driver be needed in the cab of the IEP unit when loco hauled to operate the doors as is the case on the pendolino or will the loco be modified to operate the doors? Why would you want to do all that when you have already designed a hybrid train, and lets not kid ourselves here even the so called electric is a hybrid with minimal power.

This opinion is based on information I have read on here in the past, that class 90s (110mph top speed) can keep time on some East Coast services with more stops. Therefore, I doubt a 91 will be able to keep time on any route currently served by class 90s or high-powered DMUs (Voyager family, 185 etc.) unless there is potential for significant amounts of linespeeds in excess of 120mph.

That rules out:
  • London to Norwich (max speed 110mph, or maybe even less)
  • Liverpool to Newcastle (not much, if any, running over 110mph)
  • Manchester to Glasgow/ Edinburgh? (if there's anything over 110mph on the WCML, it is for tilting trains only)
Sheffield/Nottingham to London has just recevied some 125mph running, but is it going to be enough to enable a 91+9+DVT to keep to class 222 timings? Manchester to Southampton I don't know, is there any potential for 125mph running without tilt? I doubt it

They could run those services though - many of which could do with a shortish term provision of long 100mph stock.

They may not be perfect, but we're not in a perfect position.

Would platforms allow 9 MkIVs? Maybe have to reduce to 8 anyway. And while the 90 can keep to time, it is only just and apparently would be a risk to the timetable.

I assume this means the 91s will be withdrawn from UK service. I'm not worried about the mark4s, I'm sure they can find somewhere to cascade those.

Yes, I know about cascades. Has anyone ever cascaded a train to somewhere journey times have to be made slower than with the current stock as a consequence? For the 91s to have a future if replaced on East Coast, I think you need to find somewhere they can keep to current timings, and I'm not sure there is anywhere (that isn't getting IEP).

I don't get why you think they can't keep timings on the GEML? Is this fact or your guesswork?

And you have completely missed my point - no surprise there. That wires to Weston are not justified unless it happens within the scope of an XC-linked wiring project to go south of Bristol, preferably in conjunction with an extension from Newbury or Westbury. Too many of the trains on the route do not start and finish their journeys at Weston to justify wires there. I dread to think how much moaning you would do if FGW decided to order regional bi-modes, with their evil diesel engines, to work local trains south of Weston if the wires ended there.

And you clearly still hate the very idea of bi-mode, whatever you may say about the Cotswold Line, given your unrealistic qualification that it should be worked all day by enormous trains, that would be burning money off-peak and contra-peak. Or if, as noted below, you believe an hourly intercity service justifies electrification, then the Cotswold Line should be wired this minute, as there is a basic hourly IEP service planned, a near half-hourly peak service, and Moreton-in-Marsh turnbacks off-peak as well. But some of us are a bit more realistic than that and know that wires getting to the Worcester area from Birmingham are a necessary precursor for Cotswold electrification. Same as wiring to Gloucester and Cheltenham will also rely on an XC Birmingham-Bristol scheme.

Which is why they are going to use bi-modes - 2x5-car at the times of the day when those IEPs are running to and from Weston and Taunton. What hourly Intercity? The following is what was said in the DfT Great Western franchise consultation document way back in 2011. I'm not aware that their view has changed:

4 trains per hour (tph) London–Bristol Temple Meads; 2 tph running via Bath and 2 tph running via Bristol Parkway. Some of the Parkway trains would extend to Weston-super-Mare and, in the peaks, to Taunton;

Some, rather like, er, today's timetable.

The actual SET types are the Bi-Mode Class 800 and the Electric Class 801.

IEP is not a train, it was a procurement, which selected the SET and shall deliver the Class 800/801.

Sorry to make this point, but lets get facts right. IEP shall never be for the MML as i stated from Hitachi themselves, this has expired. Thus EMT might out of options select a Class 801 from the SET range for their procurement of electric trains for an electrified MML.

I see no reason not to refer to them as IEP they are still referred to as IEP on Hitachi's Website rather than Class 800/801, most people are more familiar with IEP than class 800/801, and until some of these trains are actually built its still more of a project than a train at the moment.

Force of habit really with me, my work circle is referring to them as IEP still, I guess it's the same as using a collective HST name for the 253 & 254's with Mk 3 carriages and 225 for the Class 91's with Mk4's...

Also, I have to think everytime as to the Class 800 being bimode and Class 801 being electric which is seem to have got right today but escapes me some days ;)
