The best? is that the absolute cheapest (which could be via a long route and/or using local stopping service, and can be difficult to calculate) or do you have a particular itinerary in mind?

Presuming you don't want a change, might I suggest...

Manchester Stns-Stoke on Trent 'Rte Any Permitted' Anytime Single PRIV £3.30
Heart of England 3in7 Rover PRIV £18.50
Stoke on Trent-Manchester Stns 'Rte Any Permitted' Anytime Single PRIV £3.30

You could get the 'Rte Virgin Trains Only' singles for £2.50 each instead of the 'Rte Any Permitted' fares, but you'd have to change at Stoke on Trent with a longer journey time. the price to Crewe is the same but I think the journey is longer and has another change (Wolverhampton or Birmingham New Street).

Not sure if there is anything better than that, though I'd be interested to know if there is.

If you have a train company free travel pass, you might like to adjust according to what company it is.

Good call, but with a Heart of England the OP will only need singles between Manchester and Kidsgrove at £2.95 each way. NRCoC condition 19c applies as the rover is treated in the same way as a season ticket.

Yes indeed, I had forgotten it covered those smaller stations.
