There is no weather warning in force for high winds in the South East of England. There is a yellow warning for rain but that is not unusual or a particularly freak.

If SE are expecting damaging high winds then perhaps they should inform the Met Office who have not seen fit to warn the public of this.

Yes, you're right, there is no weather warning for high winds. However, winds are predicted to gust up to 60mph, which is still quite high. Yellow warnings for rain aren't unusual, but you have to consider the rain is falling on very saturated ground, many parts of Kent have flooded in the past few days. Wind isn't the only problem when storms arrive. Landslides due to rainfall and flooded areas were a big problem and 60mph is enough to knock trees onto the line.

I must admit, I was originally surprised to see 12pm as the time to open lines. But when you consider everything, I think it could be justified. Of course, if less disruption occurs and they can open lines before 12pm but decide not to, then I can understand where the criticism comes from.

60mph winds are forecasted for the SE -trees have already been made weak so this extra wind could make a few more fall.

12PM does sound a bit late though - 10AM surely would have been better.

Southern are currently running a planned service on most routes - though NRE have said that Gatwick Express services will be suspended due to the weather - when they were actually planned to be cancelled due to the Sloats Nest work.

Why put people on a bus when they could run a service via Horsham ?

Because all the lines through Gatwick Airport are closed until tomorrow morning, when SLW will operate between Three Bridges and Gatwick BUT over both the Up AND Down Slow lines......
FCC to / from Brighton over the Down Slow.
Southern to / from Victoria (via Horsham) over the Up Slow.

Or that is what should happen......
However, Southern's website say's no direct services from Victoria to Gatwick, and to travel via East Grinstead!!

They only ran 36 services all day today would it make that much difference to cancel all services before mid-day?

Jnjkerbin - Hopefully they would adjust to the reality but in previous years when they announced emergency services the night before snow which barely materialised (and only in rural Kent and not near to London) they didn't adjust timetables the following day. The emergency timetables were about 10% of normal services.

And three days ago they sent the first scheduled trains of the day out on metro routes to check the routes (but they were not available to passengers). They seemed to encounter few problems or blockages. They still didn't run anything up to 10am and barely any services after. The winds were declining quite sharply from 5am

I agree with you generally but it is much easier to get from no service to full service than it is from an altered service to a full service. If trains are in position at termini tomorrow then they can pick up their normal timetable relatively easily but if crews/stock are out doing different timed trains it is very difficult and more disruptive to attempt to return to the normal service.

Fairly large landslip between Dorking and Horsham :(

So Gatwick service tomorrow is Victoria (east side) to East Grinstead for coach connection.

Anything else going to cause disruption to Southern tomorrow then ?

Also pretty sure the Dorking-Horsham line suffers landslips fairly regularly, but this will badly screw the service up.

The Portsmouth direct line seems pretty badly knackered... Up to 7 days to return a full service. Good luck to them and good luck to the guys crewing the trains with the inevitable stupid comments from blinkered passengers.

.

Flooding near West Croydon has knocked out a fair bit of signalling and electrification equipment. No trains to West Croydon until it's fixed. Southern website says 'until further notice'.

Hello everyone,

sorry to like change the subject but...

I will be travelling on the 1603 Birmingham New Street to Newcastle on Saturday so does anyone know if it will get cancelled because it starts at Plymouth or do you know where it will start and does anyone know if it will still be HST format.

How bad are the delays expected to be as there is a storm starting tomorrow and will I make the connection at Birmingham as im travelling from Didcot Parkway to Oxford, Oxford to Banbury, Banbury to BHM via Coventry then to make the connection BHM to Newcastle!!!

The HST comes from Leeds originally, down to Plymouth and then turns around to form a service from Plymouth to Glasgow. If there are any problems between Taunton and Exeter again then hopefully it will turn around before Taunton and run as planned.

I can't say for certain but I would imagine it will run, if not from Plymouth, then from either Exeter or such, or New Street itself (where XC usually have a hot spare)

With the diagrams all over the place at the moment, it is anyone's guess as to if it will get diagrammed HST of if the HST set will end up on an alternative diagram

Southern have confirmed a planned service will run tomorrow unlike Southeastern except the Victoria - Gatwick via Sutton and Horsham service wont run due to the major landslip as mentioned above, neither will any services via West Croydon which would also affect LOROL.

Some Victoria - East Grinstead services are now going to run to London Bridge too, which is incorrectly stated on NRE as it says London Bridge services are diverted to Victoria.

With regards to Southeastern I suspect they might be concerned about the amount of rain rather than wind. After all a large amount of the Medway flood plain is under water with it approaching record levels and there a number of their rail lines which cross and run along the flood plain. So I wonder if they are more concerned about landslips.

Southern have announced a revised revised service tomorrow due to a major landslip at Ockley, flooding at West Croydon and the planned engineering works. Details are available from National Rail enquiries.

It's fortunate LOROL's ELL is closed tomorrow for planned engineering work which would have seen 4tph terminating at New Cross Gate or diverted to Crystal Palace, however it's supposed to re-open on Saturday which may cause issues.

I think you may have misunderstood - until the Ockley landslip happened, the plan was for *all* East Grinstead trains to run to London Bridge tomorrow (27th), because the Central side at Victoria is still shut tomorrow for resignalling works. But with the Victoria-Gatwick via Horsham trains no longer able to run, two of the four London Bridge-East Grinstead trains will instead run to/from Victoria, using the connection from Pouparts Junction via Stewarts Lane into the (reopened) eastern side of Victoria. As this connection is single-track only two or three trains an hour can be accommodated.

From Saturday (28th) I believe the plan was to have all four East Grinstead trains run to and from Victoria, with the Uckfield trains running to and from London Bridge - I don't see any reason for that to change.

Supposedly, there has been an issue with the installation of part of the interlocking system for the signalling upgrade at London Victoria. What exact effect (if any) this will have on Southern services, I don't know!

The photos of the landslip at Ockley don't look brilliant. It does look as if good progress has been made on the Quarry Line and Coulsdon South area landslips. Mind you, I was told that the main damage on the Quarry Line was just to a relatively small section of conductor rail, but quite how accurate that is (that info is from TOC staff, not NR) I can't say.

I'm back working tomorrow, including up to Three Bridges. I hope we get a clear idea in whats going on. TBH I'm not even 100% how pass will get to Gatwick.

However, what was scary I was chatting to a colleague on Mon night and he did not know about the blockade. Despite, posters, email messages every 30 mins, handouts, notes when signing in. HOW??????????????

It's certainly got very windy here in Dover in the last hour, no rain yet. I presume Southeastern want to check out their network in the daylight tomorrow.

I'm afraid not. NRE might have a link (maybe they put it up on Twitter, or something). They were from Network Rail & shown on a few of the screens at Southern stations (well, ones which had a service) today.

I haven't seen a photo of the Quarry Line landslip, but got the info from a fairly senior member of customer-facing Southern staff who will need to find workarounds for passengers from a major station (and who probably wouldn't appreciate being named on here).

How would someone get from London to Horsham, given that both lines are now out of action?

I see Sotheastern have already said likely no trains before 12pm(!!!!!) tomorrow. I'm fine with SWT and their 10am staged starts given thats around 2 hours after daylight but 12!!!!! This is getting ridiculous. I know they need to ensure safety and so need delayed starts but they are getting later and later.

I've just seen the alert on the SWT mobile site and use didn't see a mention of 10am start. I did however see a note that they would published the bus times in due course between petersfield and haslemere. Given it's tomorrow, it might be a good idea of have a plan now and let people know. Perhaps they are expecting it to be really bad and no chance of services by bus.

So you think they will be able to ring up the bus companies on Boxing day to arrange the buses for tomorrow do you?

Given the timing of Christmas day, many people may have the two days after new year off. However technically the 2nd Jan has a standard timetable. I wonder how they will manage the peak services. There can't be much if any space to route additional trains via Basingstoke from Portsmouth without delays to other services. Normally it's 1 service an hour.

Are there any photos of the 4 embankment areas with problems?

No but they put the notice up on christmas eve.

Do no bus companies run services on Boxing day? Possibly not but may be SWT should state we will have the details of services on Friday. They are the ones who said they would be providing replacement buses. They could have used the wording we hope to if we can find some. So they think they can. And if they can't, having said they would, I think that would look worse than saying we hope to but then can't.

Still the weather may decide otherwise. It's more powerful than anything I might say. Can hear the wind outside right now. May not be as bad but on top of what was there already, who knows what damage will be caused.

Some "normal" local buses in the South-East ran yesterday (26/12), as well as many longer-distance coaches - and a very impressive fleet from various companies operated shuttles every 5 minutes between East Grinstead & Gatwick Airport. However, all this was pre-planned, and with greater demand on the Southern side tomorrow, I can imagine a possible shortage for SWT et al! With regards to the possibility of planning emergency bus replacements with the bus operators, I guess they would have had plenty of control & planning staff monitoring the replacement buses. There's only so much tracking a TOC & their bus controllers can do on their own!
