If this becomes much more common, will train companies and network rail need to adapt to cope with it or is it a case that our weather is just too extrem to be able to cope full stop, no matter how more frequent these events are?

In a word ...yes ( they will need to adapt ).

I have already mentioned the fact that 5 of the top 10 rainfall years since records began have occured in the last 10 years. This has an impact on the Civil Structures such as embankments and tunnels, and this very subject was brought up recently when the CEO of Network Rail was invited to update the Transport Select Commitee on the progress NR were making to reduce delays.

i still dont understand why rail replacement buses werent put on?

If you have watched the news you will see that roads are also blocked and flooded, it is also almost impossible to get replacement buses to cover so many issues in so many areas.

I was on a replacement bus service yesterday and it had to reverse and change course twice due to fallen trees.

I'm hearing the Quarry Line is blocked by a landslip. Gatwick passengers from London advised to travel to East Grinstead for a replacement bus service to Three Bridges for trains to Gatwick.

Don't want to restart arguments about trees etc, but a couple of points that have not yet been made AFAIK.

(1) the increased rainfall and warmth of the last few years has resulted in substantial tree growth (my garden and the churchyard over the road are both surrounded by them, so I speak from experience). I would think this makes mature trees more vulnerable to being dislodged from ground that is wetter anyway. There's also been quite a few years since major storms caused the sort of wind damage we've seen this autumn, so they've had time to grow.

The St Jude storm struck when the trees were still in leaf which will have contributed to the line blockages back then. We did have high winds in early December 2011 and early January 2012, plus the remains of hurricane Katia in September 2011, those storms may have steadily weakened a lot of trees prior to this years storms. Prior to 2012 it has been unusually quiet for windstorms in the UK, it was snow and ice that tended to cause problems during a cluster of cold winters.

On the subject of replacement bus services.
Are there even enough "spare" buses to provide a single bus for every train that cannot run?
I doubt it!

Unless you start pulling buses off of other routes which is hardly a solution since many of these will be peoples existing backup routes (for those intelligent enough not to assume their train will run)

And that's ignoring the problem of getting the buses to where they need to be, finding a route for them that isn't blocked and working out how you are going to cram 12 carriages of passengers onto a single bus.

Seriously?

Try booking some buses now yourself and see. If you can find anywhere near enough spare buses with drivers willing to go out tonight to move even a small chunk of rail passengers and then find road routes clear enough to run then you will be doing far better than the TOCs as it's almost impossible.

Hear, hear.

Similarly someone on the news was asking why didn't TOCs put stranded passengers up in hotels? How easy is it to find a hotel with capacity for a few hundred people at silly o'clock in a morning! Those delayed by train disruption should think themsleves lucky they weren't stuck off the coast of France / Spain on the ferry...bobbing up and down for a few hours.

I was at Euston last Saturday at the platforms of two outbound 390s were switched very last minute, contrary to RTT. Sometimes it's worth being cautious when using RTT, especially at London Terminals.

It's a good idea to send me an email telling me and what trains this affected so I can look into it when this happens.

Stock swaps are rare - Euston is however an utter pain for platforming as they simply don't follow the WTT plan and instead work based on where staff are so that they can service the train

And the Redhill line - have a feeling the embankments South of Sloats Nest may be to blame. The good thing is that they now have until January 2nd to make repairs, though their is a good chance the work at Sloats Nest may overrun due to more bad weather at the end of the week.

Apparently, a person hit by a train has occured near Shenfield, Essex according to my friend who was on the unfortunate train. Sympathy to all involved.

Posted here in case of people checking for travel updates for weather related disruption.

Well after working three 12 hour shifts in a row and a 9.5 hour shift today I am finally free to have some shandys this evening, I think I will have about 2 before I fall asleep, I am absolutely knackered and I could have quite easily thrown the alarm clock out the window this morning when it went off at 0330(if it wasnt so breezy outside ;)). This morning was a bigger pain than yesterday was and I didnt think that was possible.

I would just like to wish all the forum staff, railstaff, rail enthusiasts (okay and the whingeing gits as well ;)) a merry christmas and a prosperous new year.

1H04 and 1F26 1900/1907 departures. Were originally listed (around 1850) on RTT as 1H04 - p3, F26 p5. That is until the 1900 was announced for p5.

Funnily enough, many moons ago (in slam door days) we were travelling north on the BML when we were informed at Redhill that the line North was blocked due to a landslip. The train actually reversed back to the Earlswood area and proceeded North on the Quarry line !

By the look of that, it won't re-open until the New Year

Didn't think the junction was affected, the orange flood defenses were out.

Exeter to Tiverton Parkway is now open, can only assume the flooding at Hele level crossing has subsided and the flood defenses at Cowley Bridge have been removed. First trains through left Tiverton Parkway at 1608 and Exeter St Davids at 1634.

I took this at Bath Spa station yesterday, showing the effect severe weather can have on trains! The Westbury ones were flashing "Delayed" but my phone didn't pick it up.

And this is how flooded around Freshford and Avoncliff it was today!

I see the last Exeter train, from Waterloo the 17.20 was cancelled today but South West Trains helpfully put on a 17.50 instead. Good on them, given that left later than the advertised last train times

Lots of problems still. Guildford shut for a time as they had to switch off the power to deal with tree debris. Of course it isn't helped by the fact tomorrow is Christmas day and everything shuts down bar the engineering trains. Although how much work they will get done I think is debatable given the big clean up that will be required and again from Friday onwards if problems occur then.

I wonder how many people have not been able to get where they need to go in time for Christmas? I suspect it's more than a few but not as many as a normal commuter day.

Do all the trains shut down in Europe over Christmas or is it, as I suspect, just a few intercity trains that run over Christmas and the rest shut down?

Delayed 90mins between Preston and Carlisle due to overhead line problems. Virgin staff in good spirits keeping us informed. We would get stuck in a dead data spot in Penrith and be unable to get info... Slow running to Carlisle now.

It still happens & has done several times this year, I believe. Unfortunately, there wasn't the time to implement this today before the Quarry was also closed due to a landslip - though I don't actually know if that was planned for definite.

Today has been an absolutely atrocious one for trains at Redhill. The last time a train really ran to any sort of pre-planned schedule on lines via the station was somewhere around 0318 this morning. Coulsdon South & Merstham have had no service all day. The entire North Downs Line service operated by FGW has been totally suspended due to trees on the tracks. There's been no mention of anything running between Redhill & Tonbridge in any shape or form. And over on the Tattenham Corner branch, only about one train has run at all, as there are at least 3 trees down. Buses have largely been suspended (bar a few TfL/Metrobus 405s) and many roads have seen flooding and large trees causing major blockages. Even now, main roads are blocked, in the dark and with little in the way of warnings to road users.

Network Rail & the TOCs have had a real uphill struggle to run any service of any kind and they must be congratulated for doing what they can. This damage was quite spectacular and they are due no blame for the overall circumstances, of course!

Put on where? Reading to Gatwick line had some fairly quickly. They found some for Haywards Heath to Three Bridges. So there were some to be fair.

South West Train twitter feed did say at one point the problem was too widespread to put on rail replacement buses. However since then they did manage to put some on. Just the way it goes.

It's also knocked on above the capital, with St Pancras not seeing any northbound FCC trains since 14:45!

Here are some photos from last night and earlier today. The first one is at Gatwick about 19.04. You may just be able to make out the cloudy wind through the rain. It was taken without flash.

This is followed by some others from around 12-12.30 today at Haywards Heath station. Finally a few from Wickham Way. Since I was last there, possibly over 2 years ago, they have now put up a sign for Network Rail staff.

Incidentally I have read that Easyjet are running flights tomorrow from Gatwick. Is that normal or are they additional flights

PS Apologies some of the photos are not rotated. I'm so use to my MacBook rotating them automatically that I forget that sites don't always cater for such things. I don't have software to hand right now to sort out the rotations as my Mac just uses the photo meta-data orientation field to change the rotation.

I heard that a Penzance to Paddington train didnt arrive until around 0530 this morning and no it wasn't the sleeper ;)

Correct, the last up HST from Penzance on Monday night, the 1739 Penzance-Paddington, arrived at Paddington at 0552, a total of 6 hours, 8 minutes late. It left 39 minutes late from Penzance due to late arrival of the inbound service from Paddington; it stood at Plymouth for over half an hour presumably awaiting train crew. Finally, it was held at Bath for over an hour due to flooding at Wootton Bassett Jn restricting traffic to only the up line between Swindon and Thingley Jn, with a 5mph emergency speed restriction through the affected area around Wootton Bassett Jn itself - it had to wait for the last down HST, the 2330 from Paddington (which terminated short at Bristol TM) to clear the up line.

Believe it or not that wasn't the last HST to arrive: the 2028 Swansea-Paddington left three hours late at 2328 and arrived in Paddington at 0724, nearly eight hours late! Upon arrival at Bristol Parkway, the train was sent down Filton Bank to avoid the flooding at Badminton, but was then held at Dr Days Jn pending events at Bath; eventually it was diverted into Bristol Temple Meads where it stood for 20 minutes, departing around 0230 once the down train had cleared Thingley Jn. Somehow it took a further three and a half hours to get to Swindon, though I'm not sure how...

The down sleeper was first delayed because the crew work up from Exeter on the 1955 Exeter-Paddington, which arrived over two hours late. Then the flooding at Hele and Bradninch was discovered about 01:15, and the train eventually cancelled. The up sleeper, which itself departed Penzance nearly three hours late due to the crew being delayed, terminated at Exeter and the stock went back to Penzance in the path of the down sleeper.

Hats off to the NR folks (and probably contractors, too) who have worked flat out & reopened 1 line through Coulsdon South in time for a train through to London - it seems - following the earlier landslip (which was struck by a train at 0408, going the other way & working 1D06 Victoria-Gatwick). It's putrid weather out there, with squally, thundery showers.
