GMPTE Rail on new electrics?

Can someone say yes or no to this please....

Are GMPTE tickets such as the rail day ticket - cant remember exact name - valid for direct journeys from Mcr Airport to Wigan NW on the new electric trains? I wouldn't ask if it were a class 185 to Bolton, then a connection to Wigan. However, I notice the newly electrified route briefly passes through Merseyside to join the WCML before re-entering GM to stop at Wigan NW. Although no stations exist in this corner section of Merseyside.

My educated guess. As you are unable to leave the train in Merseyside (barring an act of gross stupidity) in between sections of GM you remain within the system. And so tickets are valid. After all, for years GMPTE have offered the same concessions to residents of Glossop despite it being in Derbyshire.

Unless the operator (or PTE) communicates something, then I would assume not valid.

I would however send a detailed question to TfGM (in my personal opinion, they are more likely to agree to a 'concession' than the operator is). Please keep us updated.

I would have thought the opposite. The train doesn't stop anywhere between Manchester and Wigan and does not pass through any station not in the GM ticketing area, so I can't see a problem.

I was asked a similar question recently regarding TfGM senior conssesion pass,so I looked up TfGM map and route M/c- Wigan via chat moss, WCML is shown as a valid route

On 12 December 2013, dggar reported in this post that s/he had received confirmation from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM, formerly GMPTE) that English National Concessionary Travel passes issued by TfGM are valid by rail between Manchester and Wigan via Chat Moss.

In August this year I travelled on a diverted Northern service between Wigan Wallgate and Manchester Piccadilly, running via the WCML and Chat Moss (as TPE do now) and the guard both ways had no problem with me utilising a System One DaySaver on it. I, like kwvr45 and John @ home imply, would therefore assume it is valid. Have the maps in any TfGM literature been updated to perhaps include the new TPE route?

Of course they're valid as long as they don't stop at stations that are not within the GM area. Doesn't matter if they run just outside the boundary as long as all stations called at are within GM

Just to make it clear that only those ENCTS passes that are issued by TfGM are valid, not those that are issued by surrounding PTE.

The new service does appear on the rail map of TfGM's website (not GMPTE anymore as I have been reminded). Showing a line briefly passing through a grey area representing Merseyside's jurisdiction. But with no stations there. Might be a complicated issue if Merseytravel have any plans for one.

It would make for some great value ticketing if TfGM & Merseytravel followed the example of their South & West Yorkshire counterparts. And allowed stations closest the border to be available on both tickets.

Well, the official line in the terms of the ticket (for Daysavers, Traincards, Countycards and Day rangers is "valid on train services within Greater Manchester" (NRES also has a map of the validity area). The service may not stop at a station outside of Greater Manchester between Manchester and Wigan, but that does not mean it is always within Greater Manchester.

That said, I expect most guards would allow it. I suggest the op asks the guard on the day if the op is still unsure at that stage.

Engineering works and diversions are normally accompanied by relaxations in ticket restrictions.

Hmm. I'd say that map is kind of ambiguous given that the line is shown leaving the white area. Considering that it shows quite a few out-of-area stations that aren't covered by TfGM tickets I can see some people assuming that it means that all lines outside the white area are invalid.
