158 route learning - Portsmouth area

Anybody heard about some route learning or similar? In the past few days, i've seen a couple of strange 158 moves at Fareham.
Friday a 158 came across from Southampton, into Fareham bay, changed ends and back out towards Eastleigh, presumably empty
Then about 14:30 today, 2 x 158 came through ECS towards Southampton from Portsmouth
Any ideas?

I have seen a railcar leave ECS into the tunnel from Southampton in the past. I wonder if they were turning units for tyre wear evening-out, or perhaps, as happened with an HST I was on back in the late 1970s (which turned at Dr Days Junction en route Temple Meads-Paddington), they had to turn units?

Possibly something to do with the engineering works around Pompey 24th-26th in which FGW will be terminating at Fareham?

Not them at fault, it's Siemens and the sub contractors. I was hearing the latest horry story only last night and it goes live Monday hock:

At 0540 this morning local radio said that the first Portsmouth Hbr-Waterloo had had to be started at Fratton due to "signalling problems"!

Axle counter failure, what else could it of been?

This evening, three Portsmouth trains were reported as delayed by 2x minutes (from Waterloo I assume).
