Use of Bus Pass

I recently made a return trip Sheffield <> York, via Doncaster (Calling at Doncaster without changing trains)

I can use my bus pass on any train service in South Yorkshire so could I have bought a return ticket Doncaster <> York and used my bus pass for the Sheffield -> Doncaster and Doncaster -> Sheffield legs even though I didn't need to change trains at Doncaster?

As stated, yes.
However, note that only works via Doncaster and not to return to Sheffield via Leeds. You could, of course, travel by Northern ONLY (3 times per hour) to Leeds for free on your pass and buy a return Leeds-York. That would be cheaper than via Doncaster, though quite a lot slower.

I live in Doncaster and when going towards Derby (& Brum, etc) or Stockport and beyond, I don't buy a through ticket from Doncaster. My trips are Day trips (leaving before 09.00) so a single Doncaster -Sheffield (return journey is on my concession pass)plus a ticket from Sheffield on to my destination is always cheaper than the through ticket (often by a lot as the through ticket is an Anytime or Off-Peak with a month's validity.)

Four times an hour I believe - one stopper via Castleford, one stopper via Moorthorpe, two semi-fasts via Barnsley.

Of course there are only two journey opportunities as the two stoppers both get overtaken by the xx18 semi-fast from Nottingham.

I did look at all the options, but in the end decided on the through ticket as being the safest option. I went to visit the NRM and didn't know how long I'd stay.

Northern Rail run a stopper and an "Express" between Sheffield & Leeds, I once caught the slower train and the guard suggested I got off at Barnsley and waited for the faster one as that would get me into Leeds earlier!

The Castleford train is a 3rd option and doesn't show up on the journey planners, I caught it in Leeds once as the 19:30 missed and I noticed a train with "Sheffield" on the destination board at the next platform.

Is the South Yorkshire bus pass valid on trains to Leeds?

Leeds is in West Yorkshire, or it was the last time I was there although that was a good few years ago!

Passes issued to South Yorkshire residents are valid between all stations on the South Yorkshire rail network, and to and from West Yorkshire on Northern Rail Services (provided a change of train is not required in West Yorkshire).

Just to clarify I'm talking about the Senior Citizens' bus pass, it may not apply to other type of pass.
