According to @virgintrains on Twitter. London Euston has been evacuated due to an 'incident' and all services are suspended until further notice.

Anyone know what has happened?

Small fire now extinguished according to Virgin. Suggestion on Twitter that it was in a staff area.

Supposedly a small fire in a staff locker/storage room. I believe this was discovered around 1835-1840, and the station was closed until around 1910.

We had one a few years ago around this time of year, caused by someone warming up a mince pie by microwaving it on full for 10 minutes...

Just arrived back at Euston, and it's looking pretty civilised now. Departure boards are normal, so would guess we are back to a regular service now.

A pity... I'm sure you would have spent the remaining time arguing at the St Pancras ticket barriers anyway. They'd probably query whether you could use your ticket to a station which was on fire.

Depending on the fire type and restrictions. Holding certain tickets when there is a peak fire can cause issues too.

Problems further arise when a ticket marked with "Evac Route: Not Slow Speed" is presented.

That was not the only evacuation today. I was on the 1520 out of Euston and on departure the guard apologised about it and explained that the reason there was no reservation on the train was due to a set swap after the incident. No wonder the door panels were showing information for the 1523 when I boarded.

I remember the VT travel updates section of their website stating that the 15:23 Euston to Birmingham was given a SSO for Rugby, because some people were unable to board the 15:03 "due to fire alarms sounding earlier at a station."

Train commuters suffered further misery when all train services at Euston Station were suspended following a fire in the drivers’ mess at 6.40pm.

A huge crowd gathered on the concourse outside before the all-clear was given 45 minutes later. The station had been evacuated three hours earlier following reports of a fire in the plant room which turned out to be a false alarm.

Hundreds of rail users faced cancellations Euston. East Midlands trains began accepting Virgin tickets after journeys were suspended for up to 45 minutes.

Margaret Atkins, 57, visiting her daughter from Stafford, said: “There was an announcement asking to evacuate because of an emergency. It was a bit frightening because there were lots of police and there were hundreds of people outside.”
