Problems on FGW devon locals again Saturday. At Exeter st Davids last Satuurday a single 153 worked the 1554 departure to Paignton. It came in to st davids wedged from Exmouth where another mob tried to to join it.Eventually it left 15 minutes late leaving people behind to wait for the next Paignton stopper the 1651.Guess what another single 153 turns up packed to the gunnels which the train crew rufused to move because of safety issues. The solution, stop orders were issued for Teignmouth and Dawlish on the following 1405 Paddington/Plymouth which as a result delayed a following Virgiin service.Well done FGW/Dft another fine mess.

Another example of FGW messing up (taken from the latest edition of RAIL):

FGW has lowered , believe it or not, the cost of some FOR's between Bristol and London. That's good isn't it?

Well.. The problem is, that FGW didn't change the fare manuals in time, to get the new, lower price into the system on time.

This caused many FGW fast ticket machines, and the internet, to display incorrect, higher (the original) prices for the FOR's.

Result? This resulted in FGW having to spend alot of money, on correcting these fare manuals, to advertise the correct price. They then had to refund anyone who realised they had been charged too much for their ticket.

Dare I say, that Arriva should have taken over the GW franchise, let VT keep XC, and just allow First to run Arriva GW's spin machine?

I got on that train at Dawlish Warren (1554 from EXD), it was awful!

What has Virgin got to do with it?

Arriva would have destroyed the franchise, most probably worse than FGW.

I noticed, though correct me if I'm wrong, the 2 black & gold Devon & Cornwall 153's are back, they were part of the original batch sent to Eastleigh for starage. I've also noticed lately a lot of the local Plymouth-Newton Abbot/Paignton/Exeter St Davids locals are in the hands of 153s now. Is this another one of FGW's so-called cost-cutting measures?

Its because they are covering for units being refurbished.

Its a route that is totally unsuitable for these trains on their own. Cornwall also has a number of 150s trapped in possesion on the branchlines which should be 153s with the higher capacity stock used elsewhere.

Newton Abbot - Plymouth services are booked for a 153 and thats all they need.

The fact that Virgin is the company which currently holds the XC franchise, until Arriva take over.

Arriva are going to deystroy XC, but the GW franchise doesn't span as far as XC. (even with the XC cuts north of Manchester)

Still not sure what it has to do with the XC franchise when they don't operate Exmouth - Paignton stoppers.

Surely Cheaper First Class is good in your book anyway ;)

Neither do I :-? :rasp:

Yes, but I don't like them taking out the shop at all, as it removes the microwave, the ability to serve hot food, and also cold sandwiches..

Is Arriva still going to serve hot meals in FC? If so, i'd like to know where they're going to:

A) Get the facilities to do so from
B) Get the time to serve the meals in between stops
C) Will the FC trolley be available throughout the day, as it is now? What will happen at times like weekday evenings/weekends/out of the at-seat area, when you currently have to go to the shop to get your items?

Back on topic:

Seeing that Arriva are offering Value singles throughout the day, including afternoon/evening trains 14:00-19:00, which i use to greatly use myself, won't it course more overcrowding?

I somehow hope it won't, but want to know why Virgin had the sudden block removal of value singles in the above time period a few years ago.

It is the DfT who makes these decisions, if a TOC was told to paint the stations green, they would do it. TOCs are just glorified contractors.

The DfT set some targets for increasing capacity, whilst limiting the bringing in of additional rolling stock, thus, the only way is to remove the shop. Virgin, NatEx or whoever else would have done exactly the same.

We are talking about FGW NOT Virmin!

You state that FGW lowered fares, and yet they don't operate 'shops'!

First "Meet the Manages" from 0700-0900 at Gloucester this morning, and then they cancel the 0902 to London. The managers were there for a lot longer than planned ;)

I notice today on railwaycentre.com, 4 ex-FGW 153s have been moved from Alstom Eastleigh to Bournemouth depot. Am I correct in assuming then FGW are brining them back into service again?

That's ridiculous. Why would SWT use 153s, which are diesel-powered as we know, on an electrified route??? It defeats the object. Also, SWT would have to fork out to have the units - 3 in Devon & Cornwall black & gold, 1 in Heart of Wessex livery - reliveried or somewhat I would have thought. No way, I can't see SWT taking on these units.

Mart

Update:

Ok, just looked on railwaycentre.com (been at work all day btw, didn't finish until gone 8pm), & apparently the units are destined for the 'North of England', doesn't specify who. There's a nice picture of them on the front page showing them going through Branksome. No other news at mo.
