Why are there no direct services from Birmingham and the West Mids to Manchester Airport?

Have there ever been?

Will there ever be?

I am sure in the past one of Northern Rails Manchester-Crewe via Airport went on to at least Stafford then Birmingham. I think such a route would be a good idea.

Isn't there an hourly London to Crewe service by London Midland that stops at Stoke, Stafford and other Staffordshire stations? Maybe that could be extended to the Airport.

Over double the number of passengers, with significantly more destinations and more airlines. Better linked intercontinentally to places like Chicago, Washington, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, Barbados, Lahore, Cairo, Atlanta etc. Birmingham is not linked to any of these destinations. Birmingham is missing vital European routes also like Madrid, Moscow, Vienna, Lisbon, Oslo, Warsaw, Nice etc. All of which are served from Manchester.

Not to mention better facilities and room for expansion at MAN, plus it is closer than Birmingham for many places in the Staffordshire.

Is there any incentive for XC to extend to Manchester Airport? How feasible would it be for them to do so?

I'm not sure there would be much demand for a Birmingham to Manchester Airport Route XC only return at £500, which is presumably what they would set it at :D

Lack of demand. Lack of paths. Lack of rolling stock.

Have there ever been?

Don't think so.

Will there ever be?

Doubt it.

There's a good connection at Crewe off the Birmingham - Liverpool service hourly. The experience of the Derby - Crewe - Airport service may be instructive. It used to come into Crewe, virtually everybody alighted. A handful of people got on, and a 170 then spent an hour carrying a handful of people to/from the Airport.

I think that would be the best idea though don't know where LM would get the extra 350/1(s) from... what is the pathing like?

I guess it's because of the good connections available at Crewe, but also the fact it's a quite realistic for people to head to Heathrow and Gatwick by coaches or rail and bus link from anywhere south of Wolverhampton.

I'm more supportive of the Preston LM stopper idea that got turned down, as that would restore local links along the WCML and back up the hourly VT Scotland services.

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
I have noted with interest over the last two years on RailUK the numerous postings on a number of threads that decried rail services from the North East making the number of calls to Manchester Airport rather than to Manchester Piccadilly, where the use of a shuttle service would be de rigueur for intending airline passengers to and from the North East.

Now I see calls for services from the Midlands to Manchester Airport on this thread. Admittedly, Manchester Piccadilly does not enter into the equation here, as the Heald Green South Junction chord, which was the later of the two chords to be constructed, sees a direct connection possibility. Only the hourly Manchester Piccadilly to Crewe services use that said chord at the present time and the Styal line to Wilmslow from there only carries the container train services to and from the Trafford Park containerbase in addition to these services. What is the current spare pathing availability from the Heald Green South Junction chord to Wilmslow station ?

What I would like to know is if there has been any recent stated need for Manchester Airport to source an extra currently unmet rail passenger source from the Midlands to avail themselves of the undoubted service provision from this two-runway airport. Has Manchester Airport been instrumental in the launching of this idea?

That's a shame. Currently MAG want to expand its catchment area, rail traffic is growing, and airport numbers from MAN have risen, so a future link may be possible.

I have no idea, but I think the WCML uses the Styal line, which means it may be busy.

What Preston stopper was this? This sounds interesting, can you provide more information?

MAG says it wants a better link to Crewe, so perhaps extending a current train from Crewe will satisfy their demands.

I read the Crewe Chronicle article re MAG wanting better links to Crewe, but it is an odd contribution.

Putting on an extra train shouldn't be too difficult - I remember doing a slightly 'back of an envelope' job to identify the path. BUT is there demand?

They also link access to Crewe from the Airport with HS2. But if we have to wait 20 years that's hardly a quick solution!
