When the RPI was checking tickets on the GA Shenfield metro service to Liverpool Street this afternoon on my return from Romford, the reader went red instead of green, but continued to let me travel with no issues.

I touched in correctly at Romford station and was charged the correct amount when touching out at Forest Hill.

Is there a particular reason why the reader went red instead of green which is normally the case?

I got that on SWT when the RPIs came through just after Brentford a few weeks ago after touching in correctly at Clapham Junc - again I was thanked and they moved on. At the time I did wonder why the reader went red though...

Is it Pay As You Go?

If the time & date is set incorrectly on the reader then it is likely to show a red light, however details of the last touch appear on screen.

It's such a hassle to change the date and time on them, given the unreliable batteries where it needs changing about 10 times per shift, many don't bother.

Similarly for a Travelcard, if it's set to a zone which your Travelcard doesn't include, and you haven't touched in, it will display a red light, but the Inspector might not have set it for that zone.

Yes, I was using PAYG.

What else can be shown using the portable reader? I remember being on a London bendy bus a few years ago with a bus pass which I thought at the time I didn't have to touch in and the RPI told me the buses I'd travelled on that day which proved I had no intent on evading the fare along with the pass and type of photocard I had on the Oyster.

It can show a journey history of 8 or more journeys, whether a Railcard or other discount entitlement is set, your balance, any products loaded on the card, and I think the last top up transaction.

It also shows the last rejected entry/exit. Sometimes the most recent bus/tram journey also shows, even if eight more non-bus/tram journeys have been carried out since.

In that case, basically the same journey list as printed on an Oyster Usage Statement as mine still shows a rejected exit and incomplete pre-pay entry in addition to the journeys.
