Yes, it's that time of year, when I dish out the awards that the industry awards don't dish out, or dish out to the wrong people, or are scared to dish out. Some catergories are the same as last year, but others are different. Here's this years "winners".

The Missed Opportunity award - Transport Scotland, network rail, and Scotrail.

They jointly receive this award for failing to build platforms on the Fife Circle, where it passes Halbeath Park and Ride, which opened on 27th November. It would've made the site, with 1000 spaces even more useful and popular, and captured traffic coming off the A92. It would've also eased the parking pressure on Queen Margaret station.

To be fair though, in a newspaper article this week, TS are now looking at building platforms, so at least things are moving in the right direction. It's a pity they weren't there from the start.

The why didn't we think of that idea award - Firstgroup

They get this award for the decision to specify ALL new buses for the group to have leather seats. The likes of Stagecoach and Arriva are only using them on specific routes, wheras Firstgroup feel all passengers should benefit. I accept that some areas will get them sooner than others, but it amazes me it's took someone so long to actually specify leather seats in ALL new buses.

The worst excuse for failing to have information award - Lough Swilly

The irish operator gets this for the same reason Preston Bus got it in 2011. A mate was recently over there for a wedding, and couldn't find timetables. Staff at the firms depot said they didn't give them out as "folk might take them away". Why do Argos leave piles of catalogs in their shops then?

The "you're telling as much truth as a politician" award - Reays of Wigton.

The Cumbrian firm said their Cityhopper network was very successful in carlisle, carrying over 30'000 people a week. That was in October 2012. In January 2013, they announced they were withdrawing most of it, save for the 64 and 75, due to it being unsuccessful. Funny how it managed to lose so many passengers in 3 months.

The firm also gets the award for an incident where a passenger was quoted three different fares for the same journey on three different days.

The please stop interfering award - Office of fair Trading and Competition Commission.

Ever since the CC produced its report on Bus services in Britain, the OFT has taken a tougher line on takeovers. It's resulted in uncertainty, disruption, and frustration. For instance, is there any need for the OFT to investigate First's takeover of Finglands, or did they need to look at Rotala's purchase of some parts of First Midland Red (or whatever it was called). It was costly for the firms invovled, and led to uncertainty, especially for staff. Indeed, surely the OFT are the better judges to decide what to investigate, and not be told off the CC.

The successful express service award - Stagecoach East Scotland

Their successful City Connect network, based in Fife, has gained extra services and bigger vehicles, and the X7 from Dundee to Aberdeen is requiring duplication. Surely more journeys, services, and maybe bigger vehicles are what will come, but they get this award.

The where exactly can and can't we award - Stagecoach south Lancs and Merseyside, Blackpool Transport, Preston Bus

A holiday in Blackpool with a Blackpool transport pass resulted in this award. Some stagecoach drivers accepted the pass, others didn't. Some Preston Bus drivers did, others didn't. Blackpool Transport staff were giving out incorrect info as well. In fact, the pass was NOT valid on any other operators services.

To be fair, once the firms involved were e-mailed, all said they would put notices on staff noticeboards to remind them Blackpool Transport passes are only valid on Blackpool Transport buses and trams.

It's this confusion though which doesn't help passengers.

Most improved city network in 2013 - First Bristol

Having been criticised for many years, First has reduced fares recently, and seemingly improvements are now being made after years of decline. First is even engaging in dialogue with local authorities over improvements.

see what happens when local management get left to make decisions? There's a long way to go, but it's a very good start.

The stop your moaning award - The Big Lemon

The firm launched a new service from outer Brighton to the city centre recently. It only runs in the morning and afternoon peaks. I asked them why, showing them a copy of a Stagecoach Fife timetable for a university based service, which runs also during the day They said "we have a rival operator who would compete and students don't travel outwith peaks"

Stop moaning. You're competing with B&H buses in the peaks, creaming off passengers. It seems it's ok for you to compete but not for B&H to compete.

The "if we use the web so should you" award - Stagecoach Oxford and Stagecoach East Scotland

These two firms are using facebook and Twitter to provide updates and answer queries. It's a pilot trial, which has been ongoing for a couple of years. It's about time the rest of Stagecoach UK bus rolled it out.

The lifetime achievement award - Brian souter (stagecoach)

There may have been controversies over the years, but you cannot deny that this man has been forward thinking in the way Stagecoach has approached transport in its 33 years. In fact, just think how successful the SBG or NBC could've been under him.

Lastly, the keeping us informed of the stagecoach bus fleet - Michael Bonwick

Marvellous fellow, who every month, provides us with the latest Stagecoach UK bus fleetcards for each firm.

You don't get enough credit for it Michael, so I hope this makes up for it!

That's the winners in 2013, see what you think.

Lothian experimented with going back to using leatherette on seats a couple of years back.
As there are only 5 buses with it (171-175), it would appear it wasn't successful and presumably the passengers aren't particularly keen, so they've continued using moquette instead.

Does look like it's a fake one.

I don't know about leather vs moquette (guess it's personal choice) though First specifying wifi as standard is more of a sensible step!

At my first reading, I simply didn't understand the opening post and so I just moved on. But on reflection, and trying to take something I don't understand (which I'll guess is intended to be half-serious and half-humourous) half-seriously, then with some hesitation, I will respond:

Although I can't understand most of these imaginary awards, I can see that the majority seem to refer to bus travel (and I apologise that don't know anything about busses). But there has been plenty activity in alternative transport in the UK in 2013. Surely some of it deserves some recognition?

What about all the real innovation in cycle schemes (£42mil from UK governement this year), new and alternative road crossing technology, "shared space" roads and junctions (e.g. New Road, Brighton), the shifting priorities at interchanges in favour of alternative transport, the slow but continuing tram developments, the increase in motorised personal mobility scooters, the rise and fall of electric car charging schemes, car share schemes and car clubs, the £500mil of UK government investment in ULEVs, the increasing segregation of walkways and vehicle routes in some towns - alongside the loss of segregation elsewhere, etc. etc.?
One cynic has suggested that the UK's shift in alternative transport towards the bike was inspired only by the London Olympics - but even if true, the physical changes are very significant, whether we appreciate them or not.

There are dozens of examples of excellence in alternative transport in the UK, all of which should be an inspiration to those communities which suffer higher levels of risk and inconvenience in their available modes of transport. I would have liked to have seen some recognition for their achievements (and their failures) - and with no loss of opportunites for humour!

The only response I can say to this is two words: Oh dear. :|

Can't understand your comment - Brian Souter has to be the most astute, outstanding, bus man of the current generation. Even if people don't like him they'll struggle to deny his qualities.

Good, Quite right too. Those leather seats can be terribly uncomfortable and I certainly prefer a well padded moquette seat.

I guess it's personal choice. That said, I'm not keen on the Stagecoach Gold seats whilst the older First ones on the Weston super Mare to Bristol services seem to be more comfortable (softened with age???)

Mind you, I guess I've softened with age too!!! :D

I don't see how someone of such dubious personal attributes can be worthy of an award, but putting that to one side, I doubt the people of Darlington would agree that what he did was any good for passengers.

If you want to base an award on who can rip people off and profiteer and insult the entire population of the North, then sure, by all means, he deserves it...

......Dubious personal attributes......- surely that's just a personal viewpoint (his, yours, everybody's) ?

.......Darlington was so very many years ago that most people have forgotten all about it (but accept it was a low point in his career) - fortunately he has done so much good ever since that, IMHO, he should now be forgiven for that fiasco.

........Ripping people off and profiteering..... is hardly the way to describe someone who has won so many awards for himself personally, and Stagecoach as a company.

Most people seem to lack the necessary understanding to realise that one of the many reasons we need profitable companies is to enable Pension Funds to invest and thereby bolster your, and my, pensions.

Quite so. Those of us who have to rely on private pensions in our dotage do need firms to make profits.

Souter acknowledged that Darlington had been a mistake (on selling it to Arriva) though it must be remembered that DTC was already insolvent having been embroiled in a bus war throughout 1993/4. Stagecoach was the final straw, though in truth, the real damage was down to United Auto and South Durham Bus Co. However, by stepping in as they did, they got all the blame; that said, why they then moved into Preston a few years back, lord knows? Notably, the response by enthusiasts was much more vocal than the similar move by First into Plymouth.

As for the rest of the North East, they enjoy a newer fleet than either Arriva or Go Ahead turf out (no hammered ex London deckers save about half a dozen on Teesside schools).

Also, the people of Falkirk may have good call to thank Brian Souter. In 1988/9 when conventional new buses were rare, Stagecoach ordered new Olympians and also ordered a very large (for that time) batch of Dennis Darts in 1991. He also helped save the Falkirk factory from the very real possibility of closure when Mayflower went pop.

You also have Megabus, bringing lower fares to national coach travel, echoing how he shook up Scottish Citylink in the early 1980s. And then you have provincial bus travel.

There are some areas that are better than others, it's true. However, take a subsidiary like the old Western Travel that they purchased (e.g. Swindon, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Stroud and Forest of Dean). Not automatically viewed as a gold mine yet Stagecoach have invested in the area and the services are transformed:

  • Gloucester to Ross via Newent - service doubled
  • Cirencester to Cheltenham - service doubled
  • Stroud to Nailsworth - service doubled
  • Swindon to Chippenham - service trebled (though helped as part of Kickstart)
  • Swindon to Oxford - doubled and then converted to Gold
  • Cheltenham to Gloucester - converted to Gold standard
  • Cheltenham to Lower Tuffley - converted to Gold
  • Swindon to Devizes - worked with Wiltshire Council to double and extend to Trowbridge
  • Gloucester to Tewkesbury - hourly service introduced to replace First
  • Cheltenham to Tewkesbury - service doubled

That's the ones I can remember off the top of my head!

I don't like Brian Souter's religious or moral beliefs, but I don't think people can deny that he's a very good businessman whose business has vigorously defended its territory  but also has invested and developed services in marked difference to other major groups!

He's a moron, but a bloody genius, in the business world at least.

Look at First Group, then look at Stagecoach - the difference is shocking.

Plus all the vegetarians and vegans

I don't think they'll be too bothered. The so-called 'leather' on both First and Yorkshire Tiger's buses round here never gets closer to a cow than when it's running along Penistone Road past the fields!

I also have a theory that the reason they've found favour is because of it being easier to clean, rather than it being for passenger comfort!

Although as a customer, and also as someone who has had to deal with them from a local authority/campaigning perspective, I much prefer First. Indeed, in London the ex-First routes are always a pleasure to travel on as the buses seem to be a much higher spec. Similarly I found their buses to be much cleaner than those of other companies.

Before this thread appeared, I was beginning to wonder if I were the only one who did not appreciate leather upholstery.

I sampled Arriva's "Sapphire" service [No. 1 - Chester-Wrexham] recently, and whether it was due to the rather vigorous driving technique, I don't know, but I was constantly having to hold on tightly, and was rather pleased to alight at my destination.

Give me the old-fashioned moquette seats on which I can relax without being in constant fear of being shuffled on to the floor on every bend! :)

Me. Not only are they not particularly nice to sit on (I slide around), any vegetarian let alone Vegan should be immediately unhappy by the fact there's a dead animal involved.

However relating to the "award" here; Don't National Express have them on all their new coaches - this implies it has been the case since at least 2010 - or maybe it's just for that route??

Why isn't leather seats used on trains?

Please don't give them ideas! :(

Given that it'll be leatherette and not real leather (and it's relatively obvious), I don't see why they'd have a problem, unless they're a bit thick.

Surely they can't call it leather if it's leatherette? Wouldn't the Advertising Standard Authority have issue wit that?
