Always try staying a few stations out of large towns and cities. There are several B&Bs in our directory that only charge around £30 for a single:

I dont understand your hatred of "frothmas" (sp? or even the use of the term frothmas tbh) What is the problem? You do come across as being a little, how can i say, scrooge like.

Believe it or not, not everyone sees it as yet another opportunity to get absolutely, blind stinking drunk. I'd rather we didn't have Christmas full stop and have far less disruption across the country as a result.

If that makes me a scrooge, then good as I'd rather be a scrooge than be one of those people who get silly over Christmas.

'Frothmas' is a way of saying Christmas whilst commenting socially on the way people go on and on and on and on and on about it so much, that is frothing away about it. Or, to use another enthusiast circle term slightly differently...

Try looking at Cornwall in the summer; I've already been quoted a family room on a B&B basis at £235 per night in Penzance.....!!!

Penzance can be very expensive. Places like Truro and St Austell have much cheaper alternatives and are much better bases for exploring Cornwall.

Aye that's definitely looking sensible, keep away from big cities/tourist areas. If it helps, last time I looked for a Travelodge in the Penzance area it was to cost me over £95 so I didn't bother. Thankfully I changed plans for the 2011 ALR anyway in the end, but I've never found a bargain down there.

Not looked at much for my December trip yet as I simply can't afford it until 13th December, and I need to make sure I've definitely got the 14th of December off work first anyway. Those of you reading this who work in retail should know just how precious days off in December are!

Of course it is fine if you dont want to celebrate Christmas or enjoy it, perhaps from a religious point of view, but other people do want to celebrate and other people enjoy the Christmas period as a time to see friends and family and relax away from work. I still dont understand your objection!

BTW - i rarely drink so dont really see it ask an excuse to get persisted.

True, I worked in social housing for a while and it was a big no no to not at least volunteer for one of the less fun shifts over the Christmas period. It wasn't normally to busy though because every one assumes you are shut and the overtime was brilliant.

If people can't be cheerful at Christmas then God help them for the rest of the year. Our children are in their late teens and pretty much grown up but that didn't stop the two of us admiring the Christmas lights after work last week.

Many people who have reasons not to be cheerful find the general expectation that you have to be at this time of year makes things much worse. It's a case of live and let live both ways - it's good to enjoy but not to assume everyone else will.

Christmas is so depressing, everythings shut (more or less) on xmas day, not all of us have families, although fortunately it appears that Edinburgh will not be quite so dead

Going back to Liverpool, which I usually visit every couple of months or so, the Formule 1 next to the Ibis on the waterfront usually has plenty of rooms at £25 a night, EXCEPT Friday and Saturday nights in winter when they often get booked up by football fans. Convenient, but don't expect great comfort or an en suite toilet and shower though.

Failing that, you could try the Liverpool resort towns light New Brighton or Southport perhaps if you don't mind a bit of a commute.

Is anyone else having problems getting decent priced accommodation for trips at the moment? Surely the entire country doesn't book Travelodges and Premier Inns *that* much in mid December? Pretty sure Liverpool doesn't have a massive tourist season at this time of year, so why for one night on December 14th I'm looking at over £90 for a Travelodge I have no idea. Same story in Manchester and Leeds, costs are huge. As I would also need a stay for the next night, plus train travel and daily costs, I've no choice but to cancel my planned big trip in December.

Am I missing something? The week and a bit after would be more explainable with the huge amount of people racing home for Frothmas...

Have you checked out the hostelworld website? It isn't just hostels, it is budget hotels as well and there are some bargains on there, a little more expensive for a person travelling alone but worth a look. I don't know how you feel about shared dorms but you will end up paying around £20 and if you get somewhere in the suburbs as opposed to the city centre you probably won't find it full of drunken nutters at 4 in the morning.

By all accounts Hatters is alright. I've not stayed there as I am from Liverpool but it gets good reviews on the travellers network. If you get a good place don't rule out a dorm. It's just a place to lay your head down and as long as it is cheap!
