Yesterday I had the wonderful sight of 4 class 20s shepherding a very few LU coaches northwards from Leicester.

I had heard this was happening with new stock going southwards but I didn't know about stock going north

3 questions
Why is stock going north?
Where is it going? Is it Old dalby or Bombarbier -or somewhere else
Is it running to a timetable as I wouldn't mind seeing this train again! I doesn't appear to feature in the WTT. (that I can see)
Be very grateful for any answers.

The rear 2 Class 20s were Harry Needle locos, BTW.

Look on realtime trains, use Neasden LU depot, Old Dalby and Derby Adtranz Litchurch Lane as search locations. (and also Peterborough & Barrow Hill for light engine moves (Barriers and Locos only))

All the paths are there, but only run as required. If you bring up a path on a given day and it says at the top " activated at hh:mm on dd/mm/yy" then that train will run.

I'm a bit lost, but am I right in thinking the 2nd one down is a S7 delivery?

The 2nd one is S-Stock from Old Dalby but this week it ran direct from Derby instead using the third link

Lucky the problems are with S8 stock and not 2009 stock.

Given the 2009 stock, for the Victoria line are too wide for transport via rail, you would have all those trucks on the road. Would cost quite a lot more for the transfer.

Round of applause for making rail stock that's out of gauge for the mainline?

I believe Victoria line stock would be out of gauge on other tube lines as well? But that doesn't matter. Like the 67 stock before it, the 09 stock will run on the Victoria line until it is replaced due to old age.

There are problems with 2009 stock...

Not completely out of gauge, but there are gauging issues...

I just can't see 2009 stock being out of gauge for the mainline network, at only 2.68 m wide, but it is well known to be out of gauge for the sections of the Piccadilly line which it would have to use to get onto the Victoria line; this is because the Victoria line depot at Northumberland Park is not rail connected. Although a temporary mainline connection was put in at Northumberland Park for the original deliveries to the line prior to opening, it was subsequently removed.

That was my understanding, the Victoria line was built with slightly larger tunnels, initially to allow higher speeds, the 2009 stock was built to fill this extra space. Given that it's going to stay on the Vic line for at least the next 30 years it was thought worthwhile to provide the additional passenger space at the expense of backward compatibility with other smaller tube lines that the stock would never need to run on.
