Inter-carrige doors (the old ones!)

On trains now, you press a button and the doors sometimes open and then they squash you or trap you between the 2 sets of doors, well they had the manual doors of course on older trains.

My mind may be deceiving me, but don't some current Northern Stock still have inter carriage doors with a pull label on? What other current stock have them?

Just to be clear; you get them on corridor trains where they slide across.

317-322 have (apart from some odd examples) manual, swing, doors between carriages, as do 455 & 456.

I had of course forgotten, but it has been pointed out, that 313-315, 507 & 508 have similar doors- and hardly a surprise that 150 does as well (being a DMU version of 317-322)

156s do/did have manual sliding doors from the saloon to the vestibule, as well as slam doors between the coaches, although from my experience both are always left open. I seem to remember the sliding doors are being removed but can't remember why, seems a little pointless in my book.

Quite a few hinged doors. To be fair, the only manual sliding inter carriage doors I‘ve experienced on the network in the last few years have been the Hastings thumper

The doors on the 319 are pretty awful. Most of the time they don't even stay shut!

317/6's have hand operated sliding doors separating 1st class from 2nd and between the 1st class areas and main doors.

The hinged doors on 455s (and any mk3 or PEP based stock for that matter) are particularly bad, I have had one slam on back on me and trap my hand while doing patrol of my train one mid morning. It was excruciatingly painful I can tell you, by the end of the day my hand had gone purple!

The biggest problem with doors on most older units are the awful handles fitted, the ones which are recessed into the door, which are really difficult to use, and often seem to get stuck. They aren't DDA compliant though so they will all have to replaced soon.

I agree on this one. Very fiddly.

The sliding ones had more to grab onto.

Those are superbly designed, manual to open but close pneumatically by themselves. Very well designed indeed.

Equally, the worst thought out doors retrofitted to a train with former hand operated inter-carriage doors is also on a Class 317. Class 317/7s have power operated outward opening swing doors fitted between carriages and they are utterly useless. I have seen them stuck open, (almost) stuck shut, and when they do work they hit the person sitting in the seat next to them. One of several stupid design faults on these units.

Often I find the doors have just been turned off - I came across a passenger once trying to get to the toilet but was stuck at the inter-carriage doors; I was passing through, looked above the door and turned it on again so they opened, much to the relief of the passenger.

From the pictures I've seen even the multi-million pound 321 demonstrator still has swing doors!
