BBC said:
Part of the rail network is closed after a freight train derailed in Pembrokeshire.

British Transport Police (BTP) said the locomotive and first wagon stayed upright after the "slow speed" incident near Milford Haven at 22:55 GMT on Wednesday evening.

No-one was injured and it has been reported to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB).

A bus service is in place between Milford Haven and Haverfordwest.

"On arrival, officers found that the locomotive and first wagon of a freight train had derailed while travelling at low speed," said a BTP spokesperson.

"The locomotive and wagon remained upright.

"There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident which has been reported to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB).

"No one was injured as a result of the incident."

The train was carrying petroleum products from Murco Petroleum Limited's (Murco) Milford Haven Refinery.

In a statement the company said there was no "loss of product from the train as a result of the incident".

"Network Rail have now assumed control of the incident and recovery of the train, following emergency response by the police and fire services.

"Murco is assisting Network Rail and the train operating companies in the recovery process and subsequent investigation into the cause of the derailment."

Dyfed Powys Police said the road has been closed between Steynton and Tiers Cross so that engineers can right the engine.

The loco doesn't seem to be upright from pictures I've seen. Network Rail resorting to silly language like the police - "no loss of product". I read report of a female PC being being threatened and reported as "invasion of her environment".

Loco No 66174 ran past a red signal and came off on points beyond it which were not set for the movement. Cause to be established.

"the loco stayed upright" and the "road is closed so they can upright the loco" is a little conflicting in the BBC article quoted.

ChiefPlanner, aren't catch points supposed to keep the derailed vehicles off the line they are protecting?
Trap* points are indeed supposed to keep the line that they're protecting clear of runaway vehicles, although there's only so much that you can achieve - this one is clearly foul of the running line, but that's a lot better than the alternative of having the full width obstructed!

* - yes, I'll concede that the two terms are often used interchangably...

But the locomotive is fouling the line it's joining. (I think I may be missing something here :) )

Are they not catch points on the branch line to the refinery to protect the main line (presumably beyond)?

I could very possibly be completely wrong!

If that was the case, the main Milford to Haverford line is actually unobstructed, but will be used for any crane etc... just speculation though - I have no knowledge of the area!

This has happened before - 37273 derailed at the same(?) catch points in April 1991 - see video below!

Superb video and one I would put in many training courses. Plan, prepare then execute. However, how will the front crane get past the 66 this time? Dig out the embankment and move it aside? This is not a 24hr job.

Ah, I see. The loco has been thrown off to the right. I thought it had been approaching from the right. Ta.

I think '273 came off the road on the Waterston Branch, which is about 1/2 a mile up the line towards Haverfordwest

I agree, its a superb video. It makes a nice change to see such an occasion filmed up close rather than from a nneighbouing field or overbridge.

No, the original analysis by Chiefplanner and Tomnick is correct. The loco was approaching from the right, and has come to rest foul of the Haverfordwest to Milford Haven single line, which is why a replacement bus service between the two has been implemented.

It is proving a real problem to re-rail due to the location - (cannot get a crane in) - most of the wagons are now drawn back in to the terminal - one was transhiped under careful supervision - leaving the loco to be dealt with. Reckon on track repairs etc over the weekend. Awkward to say the least.....

Thanks, too. I'm pleased it's all clear now. The explanation, not the line - that may be clear, I don't know. :)
