Well a SPAD has been ruled out here. The wagons derailed whilst being moved and the engine detached and ran round them, reattached at the other end and when pulling the derailed wagons pulled them further off the rails. The actual initial cause isn't known yet as far as I am aware but it wasn't a spad or anything like that.

It will be interesting to see how NR fix the rails, whether they replace the wooden sleepers with concrete ones or whether they can do something with what's there now

There was a class 66 went down there today on its own, unless it came back on its own onto Doncaster I would assume the derailed wagons have now gone

The next question would be when or if the normal services will begin again, guess we will have to wait on NR, RAIB, Schenker, Freightliner and both customers

3 days to re-rail (by jacks) , and about 3 days to relay the damaged track. Makes you wonder how the product is moved to the end destination. Fleet of lorries I suspect unless they have a good stockpile of sand (which I doubt) ....

So as you seem to know so much about this can I ask you a few questions-

1/ is the derailed train foul of any other lines.
2/ is the derailed train clear of the overlap track circuits.
3/ are the damaged points preventing any routes being set and proved.
4/ if the train is clear is there enough clearance for people to work around the train.
5/ if there is enough clearance how will the teams work, red zone or green zone.
6/ what form of protection will be used while the teams are working.

When you have answered those I will ask you another 6 questions. ;)

I will try and answer what I can

1) the lines next to the derailed one are in tact and the same condition as they was the day before the incident, the wagons only grounded three wheels off the track one on

2) The first derailed truck was close to some points but by Sunday afternoon the points were clear, the rerailed wagons were pushed/pulled over the points

3) Its unclear whether any points were damaged, if they was there was enough room around them on Sunday to do the fix

4) Yes plenty of room, the derailment was on the first line of the three with the affected rail on the outside, the inside rail was in tact with one wheel in situ, the other three wheels were pointing outside away from any lines

5) There are only 4 movements a day the first being 5am in the morning, 2 between 8 & 10 with the last around 2pm, once the movents are complete the sidings are empty, Staff would have to stop work during this period

6) As the staff would stop working during these periods no further protection would be needed other than what they have when no movements are taking place

Difficult one I am sure, where they would get a load of lorries from at short notice and ones that aren't contaminated as well might prove difficult not to mention the cost of agency staff to do trips to say Elsmere Port, perhaps they would have to double man the trucks to get it there quick considering the TACO card system

Besides isn't some of the trains Ex Works, if so its the end customers call

Looks like the Ellesmere Port service is Ex Works, http://homepage.ntlworld.com/martin.thorne1/RailfutureEA/snippets_216.htm

Quinn Glass organises and pays for the movement

I was asking if the lines wewre clear.

I wasnt asking about the points I was asking about the overlap track circuits, they may be clear of the points but still occupying the track circuits preventing a route being called!

3) Its unclear whether any points were damaged, if they was there was enough room around them on Sunday to do the fix
So they had the spares needed on site, thats impressive.

4) Yes plenty of room, the derailment was on the first line of the three with the affected rail on the outside, the inside rail was in tact with one wheel in situ, the other three wheels were pointing outside away from any lines
Just because there is enough room doesnt mean people will be allowed to work if there is insufficient sighting etc.

5) There are only 4 movements a day the first being 5am in the morning, 2 between 8 & 10 with the last around 2pm, once the movents are complete the sidings are empty, Staff would have to stop work during this period
Fair enough.

6) As the staff would stop working during these periods no further protection would be needed other than what they have when no movements are taking place
It doesnt work like that, not by a long chalk.
