I thought it would be useful to start a list of cheap gents haircuts, preferably near stations.

Until recently I thought it was standard that haircuts in the north would be cheaper than in the south. In my experience a dry cut in the south would typically be around £10, and more like £6 in the north. However, I've noticed many hairdressers near West Croydon and Norbury station around the £5 mark, and along the main road between them, and they often have long opening hours, such as 0900 to 2000, seven days a week.

My usual hairdresser is near Bury Interchange which charge £3.99 for a men's cut. They also have a branch in Heywood at the same price. I understand it is part of a big chain which is mainly in Yorkshire. It would be interesting to know which towns in Yorkshire also have these £3.99 hairdressers.

Are you asking about normal hairdressers who use scissors and other equipment, or just a place they take electronic clippers to your hair?

Blackstock Road N4, 7-8 minutes walk from Finsbury Park Station. £4.50. Been going there for 4-5 years. Went up last year from £4. No idea why it's so cheap. Originally noticed it by chance while on my way up Blackstock Road on a 19 bus. A tightwad like me has to get off the bus and check it out

I was astonished to see such low prices. I live just south of the TfGM empire border to you (which is not a great distance away), but in the nearest large town of Wilmslow, a haircut costs what is sometimes unkindly termed "a small mortgage" and even though I qualify for the "senior gentleman's rate", it is £12.00 even before you add on the tip.

To be fair though you are aiming at two very different markets there - the custom in Wilmslow is likely miles away from the type of customer you'd typically get in Bury.

Of course, and easy solution to all of this is do what I've done - don't get a haircut :P

Not really an option for me, but I tend to get mine done when I'm visiting the in laws and they have their home visit being done.

Pedant's moment; clippers are generally electrical not electronic...

:D Ho ho!

But perhaps the clippers in the more expensive barbers have a continuously variable speed control ? Instead of a mere "will it be a no.3 or a no.4 this time sir?" it could be a "Could I recommend a slightly faster trim Sir, as your usual is now likely to affect nearby viewers to Channel 4+1?"

The salon I go to charges £17, but after paying for 4 hair cuts you get one free. Normally I pay £1.50 or £2 for a tip although didn't add anything the last few times as I didn't have any change.

There is a place near Leicester station on Granby Street which charges £3. They also have a branch on Narborough Road, and another one on Uppingham Road for the same price.

Why do I have a feeling that most of these cheap places would refuse to deal with me?

My local independent barbers charge £8 for a basic dry cut which I thought was quite steep so I bought a set of clippers for a tenner and do it myself now.

I'm generally talking about typical barber shops where they use a mixture of clippers and scissors, not fancy places which only use scissors. Although good value high class places would be interesting to know about.

Why not use your free bus pass and go to Wythenshawe where it must surely be cheaper? I bet even Macclesfield is cheaper than £12. I work in central London at the moment and even the quite posh hairdresser across the road only charges £13.50 for a dry cut.

Since I live in a very rural area about 2 miles away from Prestbury village centre, my itinerary would entail:-
A two-mile brisk walk from home to Prestbury
Number 19 bus from Prestbury to Macclesfield
Number 130 bus from Macclesfield to Heald Green
Number 368/369 bus from Heald Green to Wythenshawe
Then the reverse journey back home.

Somehow, I do not think that your obviously kindly-meant omnibus itinerary to and from Wythenshawe will be one that I will be using and I will continue to let my good lady wife use the Range Rover along the rather nice route to and from Wilmslow for my haircut, whilst she shops at the Hoopers department store there whilst my haircut is attended to, then we will take a light lunch in the top-floor restaurant there.

Geordie back from exile.
I bought a set of hair clippers for about £15 back in the mid 90s and never looked back. Every few weeks if I need to have my head sharpened, I just put a no.2 attachment on and 5 minutes later hey presto. Best investment ever...

I pay £8.00, plus tip, which I usually split £1.00 for me & £1.00 as a tip out of a tenner.

What is it with tipping hairdressers (and taxi drivers) anyway?

I haven't got much hair & if he does 4 like mine in an hour that's £32.00!

My last haircut (and I live near the Solent) cost £9.50! Having said that I'm one of those people who likes to visit the same hairdresser as I know he/she will do a good job.

The guy who cuts my hair (I hesitate to use the word hairdresser as he would like to be referred to as) also charges £6, but I normally only go when it's so long that it's unbearable so he end up having a pretty big job. As a result I tend to leave him a tenner, unless I just had a trim or something light like that.

There's a place opposite Lincoln station that I think is £5, and a similar one slightly further up the road opposite the church that has similar prices. I've never used either but know people who do, and if you just want to be sheared then they do the job. My hair is a bit wild if it isn't cut properly, so I pay a little more to have it done by someone I know and trust!

My last No 4 was in Kirkwall on The Orkney Islands ....

Five or six quid if I remember correctly.

If a barber does not advertise "crew cuts" I have often found you can negotiate a reasonable price if they are not busy :p

Where I go is £5.50 and though my hair isn't long, I'm sure he can deal with long hair, he having mentioned before (he is a bit old school and from the doors where the fashion was for long hair)

There are places in town that can do it for £4, but I found I had different people each time and the quality varied.

What is it with tipping hairdressers (and taxi drivers) anyway?

I don't know...but is it wrong that I don't tip either? :|

The barbers at Marylebone station - £13 I think it is now but its a good cut and they are lovely people. Used it for years but its effort to trawl to the otherside of London just for a hair cut now so I got to this Japanese bloke down in Shoreditch - he only uses scissors too.

I was wondering when our forum member with the most apt username of Clip would be making a posting on this particular thread...:D
