With the completion of the Northern Hub proposals and the Manchester Victoria refurbishment, Victoria as the hub for east/west services and Piccadilly for north/south, what is the future for Oxford Road?

Will Manchester Airport to Leeds and beyond services continue to call at Oxford Road or simply pass en route to Victoria via the Ordsall curve? If that were the case then Oxford Road would only be served by EMT Norwich services, TPX Liverpool-Scarborough services and stopping NT services from the Airport to various NW destinations.

Are TPX Liverpool-Scarborough services going to be routed via Picadilly rather than Victoria?

Not after Northern Hub I don't believe.
Otherwise it rather defeats the point, still crossing the entire layout to reach Ardwick.

Oxford Road is safe, I'm sure.
The capacity improvements to match those at Piccadilly mean everything will stop at both, as now.
Oxford Road is extremely popular with O&D passengers.

All service via oxford road will call i believe is the plan.

Liverpool - Scarborough will no longer exist. Liverpool - Newcastle via Victoria only *2 and Blackpool - Scarborough will be the services.

I was under the impression that with the signalling layout change everything that stops at Piccadilly will stop at Oxford Road and vice versa.

Manchester Oxford Road railway station serves a very important part of Manchester city centre.

MCO is very very useful indeed, lot of good bars within a 10 minute walk or so. :D When I go into Manchester I prefer to get off at MCO rather than Picc, far better location.

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England

I would add that it serves the local government area around the town hall, the leisure and entertainments sector and the university. There are numerous bus routes that stop on Oxford Road adjacent to the railway station

Oxford Road very important.....I pass there every day, always busy. Will probably be even busier once the KPMG place is complete, thats quite an impressive new build. They only thing I would say about MCO is that it could probably do with a lick of paint in certain areas.......and as pointed out , some decent bars close by.

I was under the impression that the Liverpool to Scarborough service was going to continue to operate, and via South Parkway and Warrington. Can anyone clarify? The stops at Birchwood, Warrington and South Parkway get a decent number of passengers leaving and joining the train from what I've seen. Plus Warrington is the biggest place in Cheshire, would FTPE really just pull out?

Yes until 2016, then they are removed and most likely replaced by something from South TPE.

Many thanks mate. I didn't realise. So there will be some form of replacement service on the Cheshire Lines route.

Yes it just hasn't yet been decided where this will come from. One idea has been extending the third Sheffield, Manchester fast service that will be introduced following Northern Hub works.

Yes.

It could be Manchester Airport - Liverpool, it could be Buxton - Liverpool, it could be Sheffield - Liverpool, I think that the main thing is that it won't be something that closes off the whole throat at Piccadilly (like the current Scarborough service does, to get from the Guide Bridge lines to 13/14) as that's a drain on capacity in Manchester.

Well that all makes perfect sense to be honest. It always seemed a bit wild having the service crossing right over what is one of the busiest stretches of track in the country (Unless I am much mistaken).

From a personal point of view I'm made up South Parkway isn't loosing any services, its a cracking station to have just down the road. 11 trains per hour to the city centre (At certain times of the day at least).

Thanks again for the info.

No problem, some of on here tend to get a bit excited about what it doing to happen with all this electrification. :)

Looking at the stats i appear to have posted far too much over the last 7 days, so im going on strike for a few days.

Caught the train from Victoria yesterday for the first time in a few years - had forgotten what a truly dreadful state it's in for what it supposed to be a commuter hub for Manchester. Oxford Road isn't too impressive either..

If trains from the Airport are going to call at Piccadilly, Oxford Road and Victoria, doesn't that seem a bit excessive?

Operationally, it doesn't make sense to miss out Oxford Road, as the trains are so close together that it will just catch up the one in front. Commercially, missing out one of the stations would mean some parts of the city centre not being within an easy walk.

Don't forget Salford Central if the money can be found to put the platforms back in use.

Increased commercial activity in that area (Spinningfields etc) plus city centre development encroaching across the Irwell makes a good business case.

Shame that a third track between Piccadilly and Castlefield Junction is practically impossible.

Thinking of closely-distanced London main railway stations, I am sure there are examples of similar ones starting from Cannon Street.

Cannon Street trains also serve London Bridge.

Charing Cross trains also serve Waterloo East and London Bridge.

Bedford-Brighton Thameslink trains serve five closely-spaced stations in their journeys across London

Trains westwards out of Edinburgh Waverley stop at Haymarket.

For the pedants there may be a few exceptions to some of the above but the point is that it is sometimes worth stopping even long-distance trains several times in the same city at stations that are within walking distance of each other.

I'm a little confused by the phrasing of your question. Manchester Airport to Leeds trains cannot continue to stop at Oxford Road as they don't stop there at the moment.

I meant when the trains are re-routed through Victoria via the Ordsall Curve instead of reversing out of Piccadilly and using the Guide Bridge route.
