Person hit by a train at Wimbledon station at 12.59PM this afternoon.

2P38 Portsmouth & Southsea to London Waterloo involved. Major disruption expected for the rest of the day.

Thoughts to those involved, lots of incidents at Wimbledon this year, something needs to be done to prevent these incredibly distressing incidents.

Indeed - there was something in the local rag a few weeks ago saying that in the past 5 years Wimbledon was #2 for fatalities in London (Victoria had the highest number; presumably that includes the tube).

All lines have now reopened with service recovery in operation, disruption expected until 21:00. Either way it could be a tough evening for everyone involved tonight.

At 1500 Woking was chaos with all the board showing the wrong trains approaching and the wrong trains on the platforms. Not normally much of an issue but at 1510 Platform 1 was for Gillingham (advertised as Waterloo via Surbiton), Plat 2 was Portsmouth slow via Guildford (advertised as Waterloo fast), Plat 4 was Weymouth (advertised as Portsmouth via Eastleigh) and Plat 5 was Basingstoke only (advertised as calling all stations). The platform staff did all they could but the screens were causing chaos. Also despite the 1513 arriving at 1453 the board at 1500 still showed the next Havant train as 1625! Also despite the 1513 guard sensibly getting permission to leave and run early to Guildford and wait there freeing up a platform for London bound trains the signalman gave us amber and then quickly changed it back to red and held us till 1513!

I understand it is hard but the signallers did not help and the incorrect boards gave station staff no chance despite their best efforts. It was very clever to try to use all 4 thru platforms in one direction to try to clear the backlog but the execution left a lot to be desired.

Not as much disruption but still very sad.

Someone was hit by a train at Chapeltown today, presumed suicide. Two in a day... Thoughts to all involved in both.

It would be nice if they would turn off the CIS boards during mass disruption as they often display incorrect or out of date information. There is nothing worse than reading a board to get one set of information only to find out its complete cobblers after enquiring with staff, it makes the job harder for the staff concerned too.

I don't know about turning them off, but I'm sure it would be possible to make them all display a "there is currently disruption to all services. Please speak to station staff for service information" notice.

That would be the ideal, the only problem is the CIS boards are directly controlled in the WICC at Waterloo and updating then seems to be low on the priority list when the disruption is at it's worst. What is really needed is some kind of redundancy that allows station staff to manually set their CIS systems to display a default message as and when disruption occurs.

CIS at Woking is controlled by the station control point (SCP). The boards will be manually updated... if you have an SCP operator who is on the ball...

Some nasty incidents out there today. I fortunately managed to miss being affected by all of them on my travels - something for which I can assure you I am very grateful for. I can imagine there are a lot of traumatised witnesses after today's one-unders - for example, from what I have read, even those deep inside the first coach of the train which struck the person at Gatwick saw quite a lot (and given it was probably at least partially in darkness, too, it must have been pretty bad).

I was led to believe the TCF(s) near Hassocks was/were in Clayton Tunnel. No doubt somebody will correct me if I'm wrong. FCC at Blackfriars may have been slightly confused by the whole turn of events, as the management had apparently insisted all the delays from Brighton at around 1700 were due to some sort of electronics failure affecting a set of points.

All the boards at Waterloo were indeed blank this afternoon around 1600.
