I remember just before the end of BR the advocates of privitisation claiming the oxford-London route could be one of the first to benefit greatly from competition as it was already served by 2 sectors of BR which would soon be private ,it all seems mostly idealistic dreaming looking back now

So true. Rents are on par with what I'm paying to live in South London unless you're council. Only I don't have to pay ridiculous season ticket prices to commute into work. Oxford salaries don't come with that little thing called "London Weighting". Some of my family have now moved out to West Oxfordshire as it's a lot cheaper out there.

Only problem with living in West Oxfordshire is that you end up with Cameron as your MP! Which is only slightly worse than having my MP, Miss 'I've got a pony' Blackwood. Arrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Clearly not as Oxford isn't it London.

Some companies do pay a "Large town allowance" or "Oxford weighting".

Previous firms I have worked for have usually paid in the region of £2000 Oxford weighting up to a very attractive £4800 Oxford Weighting.

On Oxford TV News tonight (05/11/13) there was a very brief item about building another platform at Ox. station. In the same piece we heard that Botley Road bridge was to be re-built, and it would all enable the new Chiltern service to Marylebone.
Well now!
Have they got three things mixed up here? I understand that a new buffer-stop platform will be (was to have been?) built on the south side of the Botley Road, on the present car-park, for trains from the south terminating at Ox. Access to this platform would be from the station concourse via a new footbridge over the Botley road, lying on the east side and close to the existing railway bridge. At about the same time, to the north of the station, Chiltern will construct, specifically for their new service to Marlybone via Bicester, a pair of new bufferstop platforms somewhere near to the old parcels platform. These too will be accessed from the station concourse. Is this right?

I don't think anything is finalised yet regarding plans for Oxford station. There was also an article in the Oxford Mail today. What is now agreed is the funding - £70m included in CP5 spend agreed by ORR for Oxford station. It seems that NR will announce their plans for Oxford station in February.

The platform at the south end is long gone from the plans. There is talk of making the down platform an island with a new line on the Botley side of it.

Other talk has ben about making 2 island platforms so there are 2 up and 2 down through lines with bays for Chiltern services from the north on the up side if the LNWR lines are re-instated. The platforms would be built around the two through lines if this plan is followed through. A revision of this is to leave the 2 throughs and build loops around the existing platforms.

Again, this is among a number of options being considered.
