There are clearly many arguments for and against the building of a hub airport in the Thames Estuary, and I do not want to air them here. Rather, I would like to know members' views on the practicalities of rail links to such an airport in the event of it ever being built. I would like to suggest a few assumptions:
1. Links would be required to central London.
2. Links to central London would need to be high speed - say 125 to 140mph as a minimum.
3. Rail corridors would be needed on both banks of the Thames in Kent and Essex.
4. Other links to Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and the rest of the country would be highly desirable, if not essential. This would include HS1 and HS2.
5. The cost of the rail (and road) infrastructure is likely to dwarf the cost of building the airport itself.
6. The only existing rail link which could be adapted to serve the airport is HS1 from Ebbsfleet. It would need a tunnel under Gravesend to extend it to the Isle of Grain.
7. Crossrail is too slow to make it a practical link by way of an extension from Abbey Wood.
8. On the Essex shore a HS link would be needed from Southend to Rainham where it could join HS1.
Over to you!
