Can anyone offer advice on the cheapest way of doing Newcastle to Leeds on a Saturday. I just want an adult single to arrive no later than 1630

I cant seem to find a reasonable fare or way of creating one. All of my tricks i used to use when i lived at home seem to be failing

The cheapest i can find is a Cross Country advance. I am sure i used to work some kind of discount with a Harrogate line ticket but i cant make it work anymore!

Check out Megabus if you don't mind a coach, fares are reasonable.

You should be able to use a Darlington - Langwathby ticket for Darlington - Leeds.
£22.10 SDS

Add to that Newcastle - Darlington SDS at £10.40 and that's the best I can come up with

The cheapest?

I think the cheapest* is:

• Newcastle - Sunderland SDS £3.20
• Sunderland - Hartlepool SOS (GC Only) £4.10
• Hartlepool - Church Fenton CDS (Not via Darlington) £12.70
• Ulleskelf - Leeds SDS £7.20
  Total £27.20

If you prefer to use the Harrogate line, replace Ulleskelf with Cattal, but that costs more!

Edit: no need to call at Ulleskelf (not many trains call there), as you are doubly valid between Ulleskelf and Church Fenton (you do need to be on a train calling at CHF though)

If there isn't a Grand Central at a suitable time, then for only £1.30 extra, you can replace the first two tickets with a Newcastle - Hartlepool SDS (£8.60)

If you are happy to call at Church Fenton, but want to bring the price down even further, then there may be options to reduce the price by a further couple of quid. If so, PM me.

(* Using 'linear' splits, ie not involving starting/finishing short. I cannot guarantee this is the cheapest, as the cheapest is very difficult to calculate with certainty)

Langwathby - Darlington SOR £25.70

'Outbound' nominally routed via Carlisle, and starting short at Newcastle to cover the Newcastle - Darlington section.

'Inbound' Darlington - Leeds (finishing short) - Manchester - Langwathby to cover Darlington - Leeds

Ulleskelf - Leeds SDS £7.20 ...

If you don't want to call at Ulleskelf (not many trains call there), replace that with Church Fenton (it's only 40p more, at £7.60).

But a £7.20 Ulleskelf - Leeds SDS can legitimately be used for a Church Fenton - Leeds journey.

If you are going this Saturday then as long as you dont mind leaving at 6am then its via Doncaster using EastCoast Advance fares (web only)

Newcastle to Doncaster £8.45 then Doncaster to Leeds £6.85.

£15.30 in total, but is at silly o'clock but only 1 change. if you are booking in advance then you will be able to get a later train. But the £8.45 ticket is only available on the 06:00 service, whilst the £6.85 is available on a number of services.

Or 1st class advance ticket direct Newcastle to Leeds leaving at 12:59 £22.05

Sorry to hijack the thread but is there any tricks to a Leeds to Darlington day return? With my railcard it costs just shy of £20 which is ridiculous considering the journey time of about 45 minutes!

Absolutely, just reverse the tickets I mentioned earlier, and get returns instead of singles!

• Church Fenton - Hartlepool CDR (Not via Darlington)
• Hartlepool - Newcastle CDR
